I would like to get this right for once.. Being a really old guy that has gone through many many winters without prepping anything with no problem found myself last spring having to fix everything with a small gas engine. My generator, lawn mower, rototiller, brush hog, and garden tractor all had to have the carbs cleaned and tanks drained. I've always used a gas stabilizer with good results. Whats the answer to this? Run everything dry? What do you do?

The only thing I have to deal with along those lines is my 2 2000's too.I keep the tanks full and use Sta-bil.I try to run them every 2 mo's for about 15-20 min. underload,I use a old 1500w elect heater to create the load.Seems to work as I have'nt had any problems with them for 4yrs.

We have found that Seafoam is superior to Stabil. We use Seafoam in all of our Snowmobiles,ATV's,UTV's, Motorcycles and chainsaws ( over 45 units total ) with no carb or injector problems. We simply add the recommended amount - and maybe a touch more- start the engine and let her run for 5-10 minutes ( less than a minute or so for a chainsaw).

With all of my small engines, I drain the gas and run the unit to get all of the gas out of the carb. Sometimes, I pull the plug and put a teaspoon of motor oil in the cylinder and pull the cord to distribute the oil. I have small engines that are twenty five years old that, with fresh gas, start and run great with this system. Occasionally, I have to replace fuel lines that get dry rotted.

Wsdepa I do the same except I run stabil in the gas as I let it run dry. Just to keep any gas that may be left over inthe lines or float good. I have never had any problems with my Snowmobiles etc

I always put stabil in my generator fuel, year round. During the winter I run it under load for a few minutes a month (I usually hook it up to my halogen light rack that I keep in the garage, puts a nice load on it). Never had any problems. I change the oil in the spring and are good to go.

I have used stabil for years but gas these days is so bad you can't use it in the small engines like the Honda. Honda's are so darn picky, even my Honda motor scooter has trouble starting during the winter. I am thinking about just draining the gas out but then you're screwed because the gaskets might dry out and crack. or if you need it for an emergency power outage.

Some of the loggers in this area are telling me to use high octane instead of regular gas because of the additives in regular gas. I was having trouble starting my chain saw and a repair place said that regular gas could be the cause, so I am using premium on my small engines.

Sta-Bil. Used it for years in all my engines. I add it to the gas tank, run the engine long enough to get it into the carb, then refill the tank to the top to prevent condensation.

From the Honda EU2000 Owner’s Manual:
Pull the starter grip slowly until resistance is felt, then return the
starter grip gently. This closes the valves so moisture cannot enter.
After doing this I like to do this with all my 4 cycle engines.

Here is a Link to the Honda Manual PDF File.
Go down to page 49 thru 52 for Honda instruction for storage.
