We recently moved from our pup to a new HTT. Now that I've camped in it for a few weeks this season, I've got a few of those "is this normal" type of questions.
Sometimes the water pump will run continuously, even without any water use. Other times, it will turn on only when a faucet is open.
Any thoughts on this?

Sounds like you have a leak somewhere...when it runs continuously it is failing to build up enough pressure (i.e. leak) in the lines...make sure all the faucets are closed tight (including the outside shower should you have one)

Does this happen when you fill your fresh water tank at the city water conn.? If so it is because the fill lever is in the wrong position. Also if using city water conn. you do not need your pump on.

Just when I'm using the fresh water tank. I don't turn the pump on when using city water.

I had an instance this past weekend where my water pump was running but not at full strenght. I waas kinda humming instead of the normal noise it makes. I opened a faucet and found a bunch of air stuck in the lines. Once I got the air out it worked fine the rest of the weekend. Might be a possiblity for you.

It sounds to me like the pump is sometimes loosing prime. If it has lost its prime and no faucets are open, the pump cannot get rid of the air in the lines and it will continue to run. Try opening a faucet to allow the pump to prime. Mine never looses prime while parked, but every time we move I have to reprime.

Just discovered a new gremlin. My water pump would not get the pressure up to the point where the pump shut down. Most of the summer I have been on shore water but we are going boon-docking this weekend so I put on a load of water and tested the pump. Well, as suggested above, the issue was a leak but the location was somewhat of a surprise. The leak was the shore water connection. I had not got the bull plug on the shore water bib airtight. Half a turn and the water pump stopped in about 15 seconds. Have a look, this my be you leak.

Also can be the check valve in the pump is leaking pressure back into tank itself.

Yep, might be a check valve problem.
