I opened the hood of my Dodge/Cummins 6.7L truck today and noticed the oil dipstick was sticking about 8" out of the tube. I scratched my head wondering what could have done this. Too much pressure build-up in the crankcase? Some oil had splattered out onto the engine, although it wasn't too difficult to clean up.

Well, I found the answer. Last time I checked the oil I didn't push the dipstick in all the way. There appears to be two detents when pushing the dipstick in. Evidently I had just pushed it in to the first detent, thinking it was fully seated. LESSON: make sure the dipstick is pushed ALL the way in. The first detent evidently doesn't hold it in well and the vibration from the engine causes it to gradually back out.

Hmm, should the "dipstick" jokes go here, then?

A quick question-or two ? How much oil was lost - approx.? Also, how long was it sticking out of position - Again, approx.

Good advice Mr. Ed.
Been there, done that with a five-cylinder diesel Mercedes. Checked the oil level before leaving on a 160 mile trip, when I got there and slowed down I noticed the oil pressure gauge drop-off to zero. Pulled over and shut the engine down, popped open the hood and found the engine compartment completely soaked with oil and the dip stick half-way out of its holder.
To make a long story short, I received an estimate of $7000 to replace the engine, I traded (gave) the car as-is to the dealer.

Okay no Dipstick jokes!! That is my cb handle when I drive my semi. A friend of mine started calling me that when we worked together. Unfortunately he passed away 10 years ago, but the name/handle stuck with me.

Not much oil was lost as indicated by the fact there wasn't too much oil on or around the engine. Also, the oil level was OK (always reads high on these new diesels for some reason....seems to be normal). As far as the length of time since I last checked it, I must admit I've been a bad boy. It probably was a few weeks....
