We would like to travel 2 or 3 days south of the border either into Baja or the west mainland coast and would appreciate any suggestions for a clean quiet campground on or near the ocean. Price is not an object but the clean and quiet part is as well as a location in or near a city where there are things to see and do.
Our departure point would be southern california or Arizona.
Thank you in advance.

I agree with Oldguy, the "bible" by the Churches is the best, it can give you information on many campgrounds on both sides of the Sea of Cortez, with directions and detailed info. Without it, you will get a lot of different opinions, and many different areas. I have been only to Sonora, and don't have any experience with the Baja, and I bet many of the replies you get will be the same. You will also get many replies from people who have not been to the mainland and only to Baja. Get the book, it will save you a lot of time and research.

Let's see, camping on the water, peaceful easy feeling, near a city, two or three days, something tells me that San Carlos Sonora rings a bell. It is not far from Guaymas and decent restaurants, movie theaters, tourist shoppes, etc.

Photos & descriptions of every park in Mexico. Bit outdated, but the best you will find.

All good advice so far. I will add Bahia Kino to the list with it's Islandia RV Park, although it cannot be said to be near a city with things to do. Be prepared to find RV parks very different from the USA variety. You will find fewer amenities and unpaved roads. Sites are smaller and water pressure is very low. If you have sensitive electronics aboard, be prepared for fluctuating voltage.

Having said all that, we are going back this year! Amenities may be fewer but the people are far more friendly and helpful. Ask and you will find!

JHarpJ,
If you elect to travel on the Baja side a couple of nice parks to explore on your way south are Baja Seasons, Tijuana/Ensenada Toll Road km. 72.5 .
www.baja-seasons.com

Estero Beach Hotel/RV Park is also worth a stop, Approx. 6 miles south of Ensenada.

Suggest you stay at least a couple days in one or both. A toad would be a big plus in order to get in the local sights.

you may want to check out this link... http://www.ontheroadin.com/pacificcoast/pacificnorth/sonora.htm

I personally find San Carlos very... 'Americanised' but they have a nice rv park there El Mirador

I enjoy Bahia Kino where I spent last winter. It is a small place with several RV Parks and if you have the desire for the big city, Hermisillo is just over 1 hour away on a good road and there you will find all the familiar names when it comes to shopping... Walmart Costco Sam McDonalds.... you get the picture

Apparently El Mirador is closed, Cerrado! A shame as it "was" the nicest RV Park in San Carlos!

We spend our winters in Acapulco, well actually at Playa Luces which is on the ocean in Pie de la Cuesta which is a 20-30 minute drive from the Costera in downtown Acapulco. There are 13 RV sites right on the ocean with a private mini swimming pool. Many are reserved for the season but not all. There is also a new second row with private pools as well plus another 50 sites further back from the ocean under trees. All have 30AMP. There is a half size clean Olympic size pool and an onsite restaurant. Reservations are not required but don't expect a front row site without one. You will find a site and may be fortunate enough to get a front row site for a short time. It is our favorite camping spot in all of Mexico.
