Planning a trip traveling south on the OR coast and would like to go as far south as I can before turning east towards Crater Lake.
I need some opinions on OR. SR 42 east to Roseberg on I-5 and then east on OR. SR 138 to Diamond Lake/Crater Lake.

Hwy 42 is OK (+-) Hwy 38 is very good and very scenic but it might be too far north for your purposes.
Hwy 138 to Diamond Lake area is also very good and very scenic. If you want to see a little more of the Oregon Coast go on up to Hwy 38 before cutting across and heading east.
Have a good trip. The Oregon Coast is a fantastic RV destination.

Just south of Brookings about 5 miles inside California you can get on 197 to 199 north to Grants Pass. This is an easy and scenic road that goes right past Oregon Caves National Monument. Continue to Grants Pass and get on I5 south about 25 miles to Meford. From there hwy 62 is a good highway all the way to Crater Lake. From Crater Lake it is only a few miles to Diamond Lake, and about 25 miles out to Hwy97. Be sure to fuel up in Medford. Heading South on US97 be sure to stop at Collier Memorial st park. Nice camp ground there right on the river. They also have a nice logging museum.

From Crater Lake, I plan on driving south to Kalmath Falls and take the route you give back to the CA coast.
Thanks....

Unless you specifically have a reason to go to Klamath Falls, I would suggest returning to Medford via 62 from Crater Lake area.

Both 138 to Crater Lake and 62 back west are good routes for seeing waterfalls.

I drove highway 138 some years ago and recall it is "twisty" in spots, and quite narrow in places with enough drop-off to keep you alert. It really was OK, except when the log trucks came around the bend at 70 mph, making me ride the edge more than I wanted. There are quite a few waterfalls along that road, but few places for a big rig to pull over and visit them. The Forest Service office in Roseberg, right on 138 I believe, can give you specifics on the location of the waterfalls.
