I finally found a converter that will operate on 12 volts DC (or 110 Volts AC). Came across it in "Boat USA" - boat electrical systems are very similiar to RV systems. The unit is a "ARTEC T3AP PRO". It comes with a remote. It's basically a 12 volt DC unit but it comes with a 110 AC/12 DC converter for operation on 110 AC. To operate it on 12 V DC you need to go to Radio Shack and get a connector (the center pin is positive, the shell is negative) that is a duplicate of the one on the 110/12 converter - plus a cigarette lighter plug (center pin is positive) or whatever is needed to connect to your RV 12 volt power.
Yes - it will take a little bit of wiring but it will stand alone on 12 VDC and it only draws about 1/3 of an amp. The unit also has a analog bypass for viewing analog stations. The reviews I read rated it very highly. Google "Artec Digital Converters" for sources - about $50.00 and it qualifies for the $40.00 rebate.

FYI
Looked at a lot of DTV converters. Many are sold with transformers (might have used the wrong term here) that cut the 110AC house power down to DC voltage. Looking at them that way you might find some more options.

A few weeks ago I posted a list of all of the DTV converters that I could find that use a wall wart to convert 120v to 12v just so that people could do exactly what you've done:
