Watch out for the crooked federalies. There's a lot of problems down there right now. I would look for AAA Club reccomendations before venturing down there and get there insurance (Mexican) at the border. are you taking hwy 5 ( Baja 5 ) down or hwy 1?
Have fun.

Yep, the violence has gotten so bad, my company had to close their distribution center in Tijuana temporarily and put armed guards on the premises. I used to enjoy a relaxing night out for dinner in Tijuana. Would I go now, no way! I don't know how things are in Baja right now.

You've gut more guts than I do. I wouldn't go down there for any amount of money.

Good luck on your trip.

My DW and her sister use to go down to Rosarito Beach and Porto Nuevo all the time. They would fly into San Diego, rent a car and drive down.
These days they won't even go into Tijuana.
Along with the AAA website I would also check with the State Departments website. They provide travel advisories for different countries for American Citizens. You can access the site also. It has some valuable info there.
Mexico is very unstable at this time.
I know a lot of friends that still go there but they are regulars and more often know the locals in the areas they are going. Other than that they are flying to tourist destinations where they have more security. Not always seen, but its there.
Good luck.

I would recommend staying away from Tijuana, Rosarita, Ensenada and any of the known surfer hangouts. These are where the majority of tourists go so it is also where the majority of the bad guys are.

The further south you go the less chance of problems you should have.

Don't go alone! You need a least one other group with you, preferably two. Also, you can't take firearms or ammunition into Mexico.

I have been going south to Baja Sur (Southern Baja) for the past eight years. I make it a point of getting through the northern part of Baja as fast as possible. I arrange for my Mexican Insurance and tourist card before I cross the border. Rule number one: never drive at night. Rule number two NEVER DRIVE AT NIGHT.... Drive the speed limit, especially in town. Even if the local are driving fast, don't.

My routine is leaving Chula Visa early morning (7 am) driving south to a little camp ground located in CataviƱa this is a 6 to 7 hour drive with a couple of fuel stops (don't let your fuel drop below 1/2 tank). From this point south is a very different Mexico from the northern border towns. From El Rosario south (the last gas stop north of CataviƱa) take your time seeing the sights. Be sure to plan your trip to stay in campgrounds every night.

There is too much to cover in a single posting about visiting Baja. As for your safety from violent crime, I personally believe you are safe. The shootings are between the drug gangs, and law enforcement. Kidnappings are not random, and occur in the larger cities. The US citizens' involved are those with Mexican connections.

Here are couple of links for you: Baja information Vagabundos Driving Baja

All I can say is don't do it. I used to be a Customs Agent at San Ysidro and have seen it all, trust me. People beat up, raped, killed, cars stolen, all from visitors, etc... There are NO laws there. If they put you in jail (and they can and wil for no reason!) you most likely will never be heard from again nor will anybody be able to find you. Like someone else said, you couldn't pay me enough to go down there now let alone bring my rig down there. My friends say, we been going for years and been fine. Well then go ahead but it is not safe at all. Please think about it and go somewhere else.
