I will be staying in an RV park for a couple months that has free wifi. I have been told that the signal is not strong enough to use in the RV. Will a wifi signal booster be the answer here? Which one will work best with my laptop, which has a built-in wifi antena? we want to use Skype and would like to leave computer on to receive calls.

Thanks
Chuck

I would go with an external/outdoor antenna.

You could try one of these from Hawking. I think my built-in wireless is pretty good but attaching this dish will pick up signals that weren't previously visible, or turn weak signals into strong ones. Mine stays inside when used. YMMV

I have had good luck with a motorized external Wi-Fi antenna connected to a Wi-Fi bridge.

For details on the setup, see: http://rv.mactom.com/systems/wifiwan.html

I have been able to get a good phone signal inside the fifth wheel when other folks were climbing on top of their rigs to make a phone call

Best regards,
Tom

Check out the Airlink AWLL3055, a directional USB wifi adapter. Mine greatly improves the signal compared to my notebook's built-in antenna.

I use a Hawking USB with an external antenna that I can mount on the roof if needed. It does work better than the laptop wifi when the signal is weak.
Are there any electronic whizzes that can answer this question?? I have an unused CB stick antenna mounted on my coach with its plug laying under the dash. With the appropriate adapter (which I have found), would the CB antenna work at all as a WiFi antenna?

Do the external antennas mentioned boost the existing internal antenna I have built in my laptop or does it replace it? If it replacess it will software have to be added?

This was the only thing I could come up with 18 months ago when I was in your shoes. Hawking makes an adapter that has a removable antenna, you can use this to connect with a better antenna, and the software comes with it.
If you search you will also find some antenna plans that you can build your self, including directional, that will attach to you ladder, greatly extending your range. The antennas themselves are cheap to build.

HERE is my suggestion.

Here is my suggestion

I've seen them recently priced for as little as $20 (@Frys)

I always carry a couple of extras with me for people I run into who are having the same problem getting Wi-Fi. I have sold 1/2 dozen of them so far (always at what I paid for them).

Never had one brought back yet.

Tim
