Well, the dreaded Emerald Ash Borer has made it into our state. As a result, Wayne County is now under a Federal Quarantine. If you bring firewood into Wayne County, you must not leave with it. It must be burned completely. Here is a snippet from the Missouri DNR website....

"On Aug. 8, 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a federal quarantine for Wayne County. This quarantine restricted the movement of ash wood, ash products and hardwood firewood for Wayne County. A state quarantine for Wayne County was issued on Aug. 28, 2008. "

The Emerald Ash Borer insect was discovered in traps at the Old Greenville Recreational Area (one of my favorites). I am sure the days of transporting firewood anywhere in Missouri are now numbered.

Please see the MODNR site www.icampmo.com for more details about this terrible news.

Sad. I hope they get a handle on it. People spread invasive nuisances thinking their wood, boat, etc. isn't contaminated.

And hello to price gouging on local firewood for sale in State Parks!

I agree the EAB is a real threat and must be taken seriously, but I will NOT pay outrageous prices in any campground for firewood. I will do without a campfire before that happens. I will probably just have to get to know the local woodlots within a few miles of the parks I visit. I know what firewood brings, and will let them know because I cut firewood for sale myself. If they try to gouge me, they won't get a penny from me.

It would be easy to prevent people from bringing in wood. Charge 2.00 for a decent amount of DRY wood. I sure wouldn't bother bringing it along for that price.

That's a shame. How many trees are going to be destroyed due to this bug. Where did it originate anyway? How did it get to become such an epidemic around the U.S.?
