Take the article any way you want. Go, don't go. to Mexico. It's a personal choice.
Its merely meant to inform.

I traveled to Ecuador and Guatemala last year. Egypt and Turkey the year before and have lived in foreign countrys where terrorists roamed daily.

The message is the same. Be aware of your surroundings and be as careful as you can.

I think I'm making headway into a rebuttal.

yep, when I was in Egypt, I stood in front of the hotel every morning at 8:05 waiting for my ride. I was later told to never, ever get into a "habit" like that. surely enough shortly after I left, some American was kidnapped from in front of that hotel, standing there waiting for his ride.
so regardless of where it is, prudence is the best policy.

Not to be a SA, but I don't see any relationship to rving in Mexico. We've been through this a dozen times and the same question is always on my mind.

Where are the statistics or "first-hand" (please, no billy bob said, or my cousin's half-sister's brother-in-law told me, or I saw this in a movie once)experiences of crimes against rvers in Mexico?

I have read more on this rv.net forum in the last week regarding stolen rvs, vin numbers changed, and purchases across borders, to carry a gun, self-defense, versus zero crime reports here on the RVing Mexico Forum.

I had my laptop stolen a couple of weeks ago. I left it in my car for five minutes and some bum broke into the car. Whose fault was that ? Lesson learned.

If you know of any rver who has been violated in Mexico and is not part of this forum, have them sign up and report it. We need to know.

I think there is a time for humour and a time for being serious. Chris is correct that SO FAR tourists have not been directly affected. However I can see htat as the drug lords look for ways to incite fear they may attack some tourists just to show who is in charge. At the very least this last incident will affect tourism in Mexico and thus the economy. The comment from a reader on that link about Mexico becoming a failed state will be a reality. BTW: That story was not written in some rag. The times of London is a respected newspaper.
Chris: When I am in Tucson and have to go into a mall I take my laptop with me!!!

Moi, where were you two weeks ago when I needed you ? I have since emptied out my truck and only carry my tire iron in the back. I don't even leave my gym bag in the car either. I take it with me. Has nothing of value but some bum wouldn't know the difference.

I hate to say, I also do not leave anything of value exposed in Tucson or ANY large city in USA or Mexico. I have a cutoff switch in my Ram that is used ALL the time, even at home.

I also hate to say, FOUR persons, for the first time, in Nogales, Son., MX lost their heads last week. Drug related.

We are being more and more careful, but have not changed any plans. We would like to find another RVer or two to travel thu the Northern border area this fall. We will post our trip plans soon and seek fellow RVers.

Chris:

When we are in Tucson any time around Xmas othing remains in the car. The shopping malls have security people on the roof of the mall with binoculars and roaming guards in cars and bicycles. Last year we were in Tucson in Dec. and I had my utility trailer as we were bringing back a mattress. I stopped at Home Depot and bought a big tow chain and a $25.00 lock. At the motel I chained it to a tree. Then I started to laugh. My wife wanted to know what was so funny. I said that when we come out in the morning the trailer would be there but that expensive chain and lock would be gone !!!

BTW:

There are a lot more of these incidents than are being reported. The government likes to keep these things from the public.
