I posted this merely to inform. I rv to Mexico and travel to other parts. I don't live there or spend more than a couple of months a year there, so I have to consider myself a tourist.
I don't have any horror stories about Mexico nor do i want any. Gotta figure there are a few more rv'ers out there like me. Not all of us on this forum live in or rv frequently to Mexico, but we still go.
This new twist with the tourist areas being involved changes the focus just a bit. Lot of victims out there. Trying to not to be one of them just like here in the U.S.

Galvanizd, so there is no misunderstanding, my post refers to the article not you. This information adds to the mix about what to do and where to go or not to go. We need all the information we can get. JTCTU!

"The times of London is a respected newspaper."
Now there is an oxymoron if I have ever seen one. using respected and newspaper in the same sentence.

Good. See if you can get them to join rv.net and share their "first-hand" experiences. We need them to make decisions. I can't make them based on hearsay.

Two personal experiences with crime in Mexico:
1) In Mazatlan I was not used to Pesos and handed a cab driver way too much money as I climbed out. He called me back to give a bunch of money back.
2) In Guadalajara I left a package beside my seat on a crowded bus when we got off. Another (Mexican) passenger yelled out the door to me and handed me my package.
Positive experiences are not reported. Negative ones are.
My mother used to say, "Those boys in school who mess with drugs haven't a brain in their heads". Well, now some of them don't even have a place to store their brains if they had any. My mother taught me well and it will not happen to me.
That is not to say we should not be careful. We live in dangerous times wherever we are but fear of what "might" happen will not prevent me from enjoying life.

Not sure what you are getting at Supercharged when you say:
"Read the link a few space below, 2700 dead, just take off a few for my friends and you have it all."
I read the report and it says the 2700 were victims of the drug war. Is that what your friends were involved in?
