We just completed out first week in our new PUP. The mattress are not
very comfortable. We added mattress toppers-not egg crates. Still not
great, any ideas? Can you replace the mattress for better or do we just make due?
Thanks!

Any one of a variety of air mattresses, from a 40.00 Coleman to $300.00 plus Sleep Number, will deflate and inflate easily with a 12 volt pump. If you go too thick on a foam matress, you may have issues folding your top over them. We go to a upholstery and fabric shop and buy mattress size slabs of foam, whatever firmness you may need, reletivly inexpensive.

Our 1997 Jayco beds were extremely uncomfortable. I am a big guy, and my hands, hips, etc would sink right down to the plywood. I bought new foam that was the same thickness as the OEM foam (4"), only it's a lot more dense, and cut it to fit inside the OEM mattress cover. I like it a lot, but the DW says that now it's too firm. Anyway, I don't have to deal with toppers, or air mattresses, etc. No additional work when popping-up or tearing down; I like that a lot.

I bought the foam here:
Foam Distributing

I used a full sheet (82" x 76") of the Lux HQ. But if you're a smaller person, like my DW, you may like the LUX regular better. Just use your OEM mattress as a pattern, and cut to fit.

The foam mattress's in my Jayco are just the firmness for the DW and myself, we have no complaints about them at all. Our last camper had the worst mattress's ever and we had to use foam pads we got at Walmart to firm them up a bit.

We bought a 3 inch thick memory foam topper off overstock.com. My wife sewed two sheets around it and we use it on top of the current foam and its great.

Storage is fairly easy, we just got the trunk sized rubbermain roughneck box and roll it up in there.

Could you use the 3" memory topper by itself or do you think they are insufficient?

We use ours in conjunction with the original mattresses and it is so comfortable.

Try looking at Overstock.com for $149.00 you can get a good 4 inch memory foam topper. We put ours on top of the regular PUP mattress. In our 1997 Jayco 1207 we could still cllose the PUP with the memory foam in place, but with our new Fleetwood Avalon we have to fold it in half and store it on the couch or dinette. link

We also use high thread count sheets (sown together) and placed in our double sleeping bag.

Our PUP bed is wonderful!

We topped our matresses with a downfilled pad. Very comfy, but you have to put some sort of pad on top of that so the little feather ends don't poke through eventually.
