We travel with three dogs - a Maltese, a Wire Haired Pointer, and a Labrador Retriever. We plan to go to Monument Valley and drive the loop with our TV. The Maltese rides in front with us and the big dogs ride in crates in the back. Any problem that anyone here knows of in taking them in our TV on this 17 mile loop? What I mean is, do they allow pets on the land there - reservation? They probably do but I don't want to assume anything. I checked the site but there is no mention of pet bans so it sounds ok to me. Just double checking.

We were there this past spring. Really can't answer the pet question. I can say that the only time I saw anyone of "authority" was the young Indian lady that took our money for our camping and entry permits. IMO I would just take them.

Are you dry camping at Monument Valley or across the road at Goulding's?

THanks for the info. We'll probably stay at Goulding's but we are open to dry camping and boondocking as we've done both a lot. We plan to boondock later in our trip near the North Rim of the GC.

We took our two doggies with us in the (toppered) back of our truck last time we were there. No problem whatsoever, though it was April, so still cool outside.

Thanks eubank - We will hopefully be there next week so we are hoping it won't be too hot for us and the dogs.

Hi,

If it is not to hot, I highy recommend staying at the campground overlooking the "Mittens" - where I stayed. I was there in October several years ago, and the weather was nice enough that no A/C was needed. It is dry camping with an amazing view!

When we camped in the Indian campground, we could use our camping receipt to enter the monument for free. I was there until after dark, and you have to leave via a seperate entrance that is used to the Indians living on the reservation can access the area after dark, when the main gates are locked.

Take plenty of pictures!

Also consider going to Mexican Hat. It is a small mountain with differant colors of layered sediment, looking like a multi-color hat.

I also took a drive from Hite Marina where we had dry camped a few days before, and then came down this cliff on highway 261, about 10 or 15 miles northwest of Mexican Hat. Great pictures of the valley from the top of the cliff. It is also near Gooseneck State Park, a great place to look at the San Juan River well below the parking lot.

Fred.

THanks for the information Golden_HVAC. Mexican Hat, Dugway and Naturual Bridges was also recommended by another fellow RV.net'er. REally looking forward to this trip. After weeks of delay due to setbacks at work (in the software business. DH is CIO and I'm Director of Program Mgt - if product doesn't go, we don't go!), we have finally decided on where we are going and now we both are really looking forward to it.

Just a hint about Monument Valley - I've been there twice with dogs and had great experiences. I decided to take a private Jeep tour one morning so I stopped at the first tour company on the left as you leave Gouldings. I'm being specific because I want to highly recommend these guys. The first tour I took with just Bortan. We went in a nice little Jeep, Bortan rode in the back seat (seat belt! the road is rough and the Jeeps are open. Easy to jump or fall out) in great style. The guide was nice. Very cheerful. We went over the map before we left and I was frank about how much I could afford and what I wanted to see. Had a terrific time and Bortan enjoyed it too. 2 years later I returned with DH and 3 large dogs. I had planned to stay behind with the dogs while DH took the tour, but first off, the guides pointed out that two guests cost the same as one and said, "just bring the dogs along." Well, um, they wouldn't all fit in that little Jeep, but when I showed the dogs to the owner, all he said was, "We'll get a bigger Jeep." After a little delay we loaded all 3 dogs, DH and me into a 6 person Jeep - at no extra cost. We had a magnificent time.

The Navajo aren't terribly thrilled with dogs like we Belacani, but they don't object to them when leashed by responsible owners. You absolutely must not let pet dogs of any size off leash on their lands!

I highly recommend the nearby sights of the Goosenecks of the San Juan and Moki Dugway. If the water is running (ask around) the drive out to Grand Falls is worth it too.

Dernhelm. Thanks for the great feedback. We have an F250 4x4 so we will take that on our tour. We are really looking forward to it and we will ask around about the water running for the falls.
