We are leaving NW Washington end of November to go south. Wife wants to finish our Oregon coast trip from Newport to Crescent City CA. I don't have a supplemental brake on our dinghy but wanted to go to DeMartini RV in CA thinking about trading. So if I don't go through CA what route to get to Mesa AZ through Las Vegas NV?
Not crazy about leaving that late but would like to miss as many snowy passes as possible. Has anyone left NW Washington that late to go south?? Thanks for any input.
Not putting on supplemental brakes until I decide on coach and towbie.
We made the trip last spring and drove down I-5 to Olympia area, then over to US 101 which we drove all the way down past Eureka. Trip was great and the OR SP's are sure nice places to spend the night, no reservations needed that time of year. Getting from US 101 over to Las Vegas can be done several ways, we ended up in Death Valley and Joshua Tree NP's, not too far from LV, but took a rather long way to get there since we visited relatives in the Reno area. Others will no doubt have good ideas on best route to LV if you take US 101 south to northern CA, so will leave that up to them. Have a good trip!
We usually don't head south until about the 10th of December. My route of choice is US97 to Weed, CA through Klamath Falls. Then I-5 to Stockton, and US99 to Bakersfield. From there one can take CA58 and I-15 to Las Vegas.
If the weather conditions are bad (excessive cold) on the east side of the Cascades, we travel west on I-84 from Biggs, OR, and pickup I-5 in Portland. The only snowy area would be in the Siskiyous, between Ashland, OR, and Redding, CA. We have been held up only once, in the many winter trips through that region. We usually try to hit Ashland between 10:00 AM and noon.
From Las Vegas to Mesa, you can take US 95 to I-40, east to AZ 95 through Lake Havasu, to AZ72 just beyound of Parker, which will take you to I-10, and a straight shot into the Phoenix area.
Thanks for the information. This is our first major trip south for the winter and gramma doesn't want to leave grandkids until after Thanksgiving. So crossing our fingers, coolbreeze01, and heading down 101 sounds like the route to take.
Musicman, Wenatchee is where I am originally from. Retired in 06 and took gramma over to Skagit country for grandsons. Now trying to become snowbirds.
We will see what we are made of this time and if we continue October may be a better time for us. Thanks again for all the info.
