China Beach is one of our favourite campgrounds. The beach is lovely on sunny days in May ...

How is the undergrowth developing at China Beach? I looked at it shortly after it was constructed (a few years ago), and it seemed awfully bare, thoroughly shaded by dense second growth forest. It didn't seem as a attractive as older campgrounds like French Beach.
Where the rocky shore shots taken near China Beach? I visited the beach there once, but have spent more time at Sombrio Beach and Botanical Beach (Port Renfrew) further west.
Now you can make a comfortable loop to Port Renfrew from Victoria along the coast, and then return via Lake Cowichan and Duncan. The road inland from Port Renfrew is now paved and/or good gravel. In fact, given the curves and narrow pavement west of China Beach, the inland road may be better.

Paul - the undergrowth is as in the first pic - pretty well grown and decently thick. The rocky beach is Botany Bay (near Botanical) and the sunset pic is China Beach.

Here's one of my pictures from Botanical Beach, from a year ago. This was at fairly high tide, so we spent more time in the forest than on the rocks. We saw a small bear crossing the parking lot at BB.

Last time through we had a picnic lunch near Port Renfrew, camped at French Beach, had lunch as Mom's Cafe in Sooke (decent burgers and pies), my wife took the garden tour at Sooke Harbor House, I walked the dog along the split.
Later in the day, we hiked at bit a Gold Stream PP, meandered through the nearby highlands, and then caught the ferry to Saltspring Island, and camped on the beach at Ruckle PP.

The undergrowth is doing well at China Beach. However, winter storms two years ago took down many of the big trees that had been left through the middle of the campground and along the edges.
The poor CG attendant was beside herself with all of the clearing work that was ahead of her. Some of the sites have less privacy then usual for a provincial park, because so many of those trees came down.
A nice thing about China Beach is the majority of sites are "first come, first serve". Whereas at French Beach, the majority are reservable. French Beach is open year-round though, and China Beach is not.
