You always need to consider the source of your water. When I lived in the city I would leave water in my tank for up to two months. I now live open rural on two acres with my own water well (no water treatment except softener). I will not leave water in the tank for any length of time. I see alge trying to grow in my cats water bowl and a bird bath and I have to keep them clean.

Drink form mine all the time, that's why it is fresh water for pennies a gallon compared to the bottled stuff at 59cents for 6 oz...gheez and think of all the plastic. Sanitze every few months with a table spoon of bleach over night in a full tank and then drain and refill for travel.
Hey have you guys got your 4 way outside tap tool for those taps that don't have handles that people break or steal! Get one at a plumbing supply house for 2 bucks. It is very handy when looking for fresh water!
Go AHEAD DRINK form you tank it is at least six feet from the black tank. When domestic water supply is installed in the ground it has to be above and 10' away from a sewer pipe..how about that and remember sewer pipes always leaked until the plastic pipes came into common use...pipes were clay or concrete bell and spigot no gasket for decades, what a mess they were! Just remembering my PUBLIC WORKS days...retired and very HAPPY to drink form my TC water tank cause I know what it is all about!!! PLUS I don't need to find a place to store a case of bottles! :>) Capt PJ

We fill it, use it and refill as needed. I don't use the city water fill up hardly ever even in campgrounds with full hook ups. If my tank goes empty, I will refill right there, but put the hose away when I am done and continue to use the tank.
This summer, we are still using the original 36 gallons of water I put in back in late July. This includes 3 nights in the coast range, and then 4 nights recently at the beach. Tank level still shows we have close to 1/2 tank.
As for longer storage, I just drain and leave the valve open. If after winterizing, I'll do the sanitizing, otherwise we just fill and go.

We leave ours filled year round in case of an emergency, since it's an easy way to keep 44gal on hand. I dump and refill before a trip though and add a little bleach when doing so. I have never understood the phobia about using the water in the tank for drinking. We drink from our tank and only bring bottled water for use when we are going to be away from the TC on a walk or something. Even then we will refill the bottles from our faucet as needed during the trip. I do use a filter on the fill hose when away from home (to keep junk out of the tank) and have a very good filter we dispense the drinking/cooking water from. We also travel with a full water tank unless we are headed home on the final leg of a journey.
