I've been back and forth with and yes, i dont have one. I tow a WW 38', 3 axle and I know I need to get the rating. Any tips for me as Im alittle worried about the test. What does it consist of? What are the fines if caught not having one? Do they check to see if the TV is rated for the trailer? Does it have to be in my 38 footer, can i show up with a smaller trailer? I've been towing mine since new back in January and havent had any incidents (thank God) but I was thinking about borrowing my friends 28' bumper tow.

I have one, got it in GA. I did not have one when we lived in SOCAL, but I guess I needed one. It is not hard all to get, I had to take the written test, no road test. 50 questions. I just read the GA DMV Class A manual. Not hard at all. I was never pulled over by any police when towing my 37 foot 5th wheel. But I know many how have been, so because I am in the army I just wanted to be covered, plus it got me a break on my insurance with USAA.

I'm in the same position. I have to have it but don't really want to take the test. I've already taken the written when I got the "RV Endorsement". I thought that was all I needed. I know someone who has taken the test. I'm sure different test givers are different, but heard the pre-inspection needed to be right on the money. Also need to add flares, and triangle reflectors to the truck for the inspection. Driving test includes backing into an area with cones in addition to the regular driving standards rounding corners, etc.

I was in the same boat last year. Whent and did it, NO Big Deal.
First I went on my lunch and took the written test. I only had to take the quick trailer test and only got one wrong. I didn't even study or know what to expect. But passed it and took an eye exam. They gave me a permit and an appointment for the following week for the practical test.
I did read the booklet the night before the test.
The day of the test I showed up with my F350 and 40' Gearbox at the Fullerton DMV. You go to the back of the parking lot and wait with the big rigs for the test.
The guy takes a look at your rig to make sure it is over 15,000 GVWR and askes you to perform a few things like the horn, breaklights, seatbelts, and have all the safety stuff required. I don't think you can use a bumper pull. The rating has to be OVER 15K. If you show up with less they will tell you you don't need it.
Then you wait.
Then we did the inspection. Just go through all the pre-inspection as if you are going on a trip and do it out load so he/she can hear you do it. He asked a few questions about tire tread and I passed it. STUDY for this section!!!!
Then you wait.
Then you do the parking lot skills test. This was easy.
Then the driving test on the road. Easy, just don't break the law and you pass. I drove slow and obeyed all the signs and talked to the examiner the entire time.
The process took a total of 4 hours.
Don't sweat it, just do it.

I got mine this past Spring and I would recommend it.
If your caught driving out of class they can and most likely will force you to park it.
The test takes some work and commitment but the piece of mind was worth it to me!
