I bought a locking chrome cover for my tank, but the cap that screws into the tank opening is the same piece. I only changed the door and the housing. Didn't have an issue. . .

Each year we have to have emission test which include a gas cap check. The first year I went with a locking gas cap it failed. The guy said more locking gas caps failed than passed. He sent me to Walmart to get another cap for him to check.

As a side note, like all locks, determined thieves will still get your goods. Around here they're cutting the hose between the tank and filler or punching a hole in the tank. As a result I re-thought the whole locking gas cap thing. I decided better to make it easier than have my truck damaged.

Around here, the 16 year old petty thief kids will steal 5 gallons of gas just so they can go joy riding in their car on a Saturday night. I am more interested in thwarting the petty thief then the career criminal. If a career criminal targets my vehicle, so be it, that is why I have insurance. I have a locking gas cap to convince the petty thief kid to target my neighbors car instead.

Did you try your GM dealer for a locking cap?

It totally agree, with just letting the thieves get the fuel the easy way, and not encourage them to damage your TV getting the fuel.

I've heard too many horror stories of drilled fuel tanks and cut fuel tank hoses.

One nice thing, my Dodge CTC sits right under a street light on our residential street. The fuel door side is totally illuminated by the street light, and doesn't give the fuel thieves a nice dark area to do their dirty deed.
