What if all you have is an automative GPS? Afterall, most people probably don't have two separate types.

To an address? That implies an automotive GPS

Not necessarily, two of my handhelds (60CS & 60CSX) will allow you to create a route (or off road direction) to a specific address. I have City Select 07 loaded on the CS and City Navigator 2008 on the CSX.

Both are list on Garmin's website as "On the trail".

Salem, also keep in mind that if you're in the bush, the trails aren't loaded into the GPS in the same way the roads are. You can have your home's location recorded in the GPS, or where you left your vehicle if you recorded it before heading into the bush, and the GPS will tell you the most direct route from from point A to point B, and the distance "as the crow flies". However, it doesn't know the trails in the bush so it's up to you to meander hither-dither on trails or bushwhack, and keep yourself moving in the correct direction until you reach your marked point. This is why having topographic maps loaded into the GPS is most useful if you plan to hike into the backwoods. Then you can avoid the dead-end cliff or the mile wide lake.

My 260 has a bicycle and pedestrian mode and to my surprise, it does have some campground roads on it. Trails no, but you can get a direction to walk or bike and know where you are by zooming in or out. If I were lost in the woods and punched in a destination, I would at least know which way to go/which way I was heading.

to further confuse me, my bass pro shops catalog just came and now they show a 205, 205W, etc. can't really figure out the difference. supposedly 205W has live traffic available, hotfix, new downloads and a $50 less MAP price?
whatever all of that means.

The W model is about 1" wider, otherwise the same.

The 205x has "regional maps" which looks like that means no Canada. Not sure what else it's missing. I just found yet a THIRD part of the Garmin site that does feature comparisons... I've gotta wonder how many product management groups they've got there and who is driving.

Just ordered the 255W off Amazon for $248.

I decided I liked having all the maps, the QWERTY option, TTS and the 2x5's have a set "new" features that seem desirable. Hopefully I'll get more than 4 years use out of this one.

Thanks to those who helped me navigate the features, options etc - appreciated.

davelinde- I hope you like the 255 as much as I like mine. In checking all the various models the 255 turned out to be the best fit for me.
It doesn't come with good manual, only a quick guide. You have to play with it a bit do discover some of the features. If you would like me to share what I found pm me.
