Hi everyone - this is our first post on this forum although I have to admit we have been lurking here for a long time, getting lots of info and entertainment from all of you. But I just had to show you a mod my DH made for me before our last trip. I was frustrated by the difficulty of getting things in and out of the large cabinet over the dinette. I knew we weren't going to use that space for a bed and the small doors and blank wall space between them was always inconvenient. So my DH removed the whole cabinet face by unscrewing it from the piano hinge along the bottom. He then made the cabinet deeper by adding a 3" piece along the bottom edge. This makes the cabinet deep enough for a folded jacket or a large towel. Then he made a new frame for the opening. He put tracks for sliding doors on the top and bottom of the frame and attached it to the wall and bottom of the cabinet. Then he made large sliding doors out of masonite. Now the cabinet can be opened up the whole way from top to bottom and side to side. Everything is easily accessible and the storage space has been greatly increased.

Nice job, this is a very common type cabinet we use on vessels at sea, not having to worry about doors swinging open is very usefull.

good work but now don't you have to be a little more careful not to bump your head on it?

BR,
ALL he did was modify the doors on an existing cabinet.

the way I read the post, which could be wrong, is that he also extended the cabinets out 3 inches ? to have a wider shelf.

The cabinet is 3" deeper but we haven't even noticed it when getting in and out of the dinette. We just returned from a 4 week trip up the Oregon coast and through Washington and I found it to be a huge improvement over the old cabinet doors.

Nice. On my Lance we just lowered the doors like we were going to use it for a bunk, put 5 plastic storage containers (about 14" x 30") up there and hooked the net up. Works great for us, but since I see your setup-well I'm trying to figure out how ambitious I am. Sure like it though. Gary
