We are currently staying at a park in Wauchula Fl. Our site was a little narrow for our bus & I was pretty proud of ourselves when we backed in perfectly between the concrete patio & the 1 palm tree on the opposite side that was positioned between the 2 slides. That evening I noticed a rather LARGE! SPIDER(3 inches across) in the bathroom. I screamed for DH, my HERO!, & grabbed a can of bug spray. Between the 2 of us we made quick work of the intruder. The next morning we went outside & noticed some of the palm fronds were resting against the side of the bus & were possibly how the spider got onto & into our bus. We got out the clippers & trimmed back the tree & sprayed everything that came into contact on the ground.( something I usually do to discourage ants, but had neglected to do when we pulled in) I did a search on the internet & ID'd our visitor- a brown recluse spider! very poisonous! though not agressive. I will have the creeps for weeks now but have learned another lesson....watch out for anything touching your unit as it can be used as an easy route in.

Brown Recluse spiders are not big. They are small as a dime & have a violin shape on their back.

The brown recluse is not indigenous to Florida though they are often transported on materials. They usually like dark secluded places.

Did it have a violin shape in the area of its head/thorax?

It was likely a "Touring Interloper Motorhome Spider" , better know for it's ability scare the beejeebers out of unsuspecting RVer's in Florida. They like to spend time at the ocean to work on their suntans. They are native's of the Bronx.

Warning! Scary Spider!

Are you sure. I don't think they are that big. But, if you are counting the legs and off a little on your extimation; maybe.

There are 3 types of brown recluse( from what I found searching online).2 are not native, the Chilean & the Mediteranean, but the 3rd can be found in all the southern states & Texas. Mediteranean were found only once in US & that was a small colony found in a house in Winter Haven, about 20 miles from here! & were erradicated on the site. The "common" brown recluse are usually smaller but can reach sizes up to 3 inches. I am not an expert, I'm only relating what I've just learned myself. & yes it had the classic violin shape on it's back. We saved the corpse & I found an address at the U of F where we can send it for a full ID. It provided me with directions on how to preserve the remains -ICK!- & how to ship it.

The Brown Recluse does have a violin shape on its carapace. (Where the legs attach) It's upside down - in other words, you see the violin shape while looking at him head on. It’s pretty obvious, and looks like a base fiddle.

But, the Recluse’s furry, brownish carapace and striped abdomen resemble too many other spiders including the Hobo, Wolf and Grass spiders.

But…

The easiest way to ID a Brown Recluse: they have NO leg stripes. The others all have banded legs – e.g. alternating light/dark browns and blacks, but the Recluse has light brown SOLID colored legs. If ‘spidy’ has legs with strips or bands, it’s a non-worry. Well, mostly non-worry. All spiders can bite, and all have poison. Most are not deadly, but you still don’t want to get bitten.

It was probably a Fla. wolf spider, I lived 25miles from that location, and have killed enough of them to have a BBQ.I don't know how many times I've woke up in the morning to have one of those on the wall looking down at me, their pretty fast, and have great eye sight with those 8 eyes.I've killed some that must of been about 4inches across, and you could even hear their foot steps when they run.We have the brown recluse too, but they seem to lay flatter to the wall than a wolf, and not near as large, I don't see too many of those around.Watch out for them little baby scorpions if you pick up something off the ground, their everywhere around here.
