Gents,
It's been a while since I been here. I did a search but not sure I came up with the results needed for a decision. I'm about to go on a long trip from San Diego to Colorado, (Ouray, Silveton etc). If I recall, Ford recommends a certain oil for their V-10. I've heard a lot of Royal Purple lately and was wondering, has anyone tried it, is there a marked improvement in any operation of the motor, that is idleling, power, fuel mileage etc? Was there any temperature change in the temp gauge? I've used Castrol 20-50 for years in my 460 Class C and for the first couple of years in my present Bounder V-10. It gets about 6 mpg on average towing our Jeep Rubicon all over the planet. I'm not expecting miricals but was just wondering if there's any real reason to spend the money on that oil or keep my Castrol? Thanks for your opinions guys.

I think you will find that they say to use 5 w 20 in the V 10 for best mileage and all round performance. In fack that is the only oil they say to use.
As for Royal Purple I don`t think it is worth the money and a long time ago I tried it and did`t like it.I have went to full synthetic
5 w 20 in the V 8 version of that engine. And so far so good.5 W 20 mite help your fuel millage.I have friends that have the V 10 in class A`s and do from 8 to 10 MPH with tow.The Ford book makes it clear in my 2004 not to put any thing in it but 5 W 20 and do not add any thing as oil additives to it.

The manual that came with our 2000 with the v10 spec'd 5w-30 oil to use. I understand later models now spec 5w-20. I use Mobil 1 5w-30 in ours and after 58,000 miles has worked well for us. I do not use any oil additives per Ford's instructions in the owners manual.

Scott the first thing that jumped out at me as well was heavy oil you were using. While it may be OK I went with the manual specs from Ford for our Ford. Heavier weights just do not lube as well typically.
Purple Royal is like STP and other lines of auto engine care products. Years ago they had their places but engines have changed and even the low priced dino engine oil is much enhanced.
NO engine today will die before its time is just using the factory spec oil and oil change program in the owners manual.
Kind of like our eating. We can get the same needed food groups when eating out for $10 as one dining out and dropping $40 bucks. If the experience is worth $30 more go for it. Just do not expect to live longer.

Naturally Ford says use motorcraft. Castrol has the same specs. I use 5w20 in the 06 model. I used 5w30 in the 97 model we had before. I use castrol in all the gasoline engines we have had over the years. The only place I use 20w50 is in the air cooled VW.
When you said royal purple I thought about Union 76 Triton. I put many gallons in the big trucks back in the 60's. Is that what you are talking about? is it still around?

Thanks for all the responses guys. This is one of those things where I just have done what I've always done. That doesn't mean it's right, I just get stubborn. I sometimes figure I know more than six figure engineers of major auto manufacturers. I guess I might as well do what the book and all of you tell me. It's off to Auto Zone for some 5W20. I suspect Castrol brand will still be good though. One of you wrote that there's V-10s out there getting 8-10 mpg, mine wouldn't get that if it were dropped from a plane. I keep the tires up, the speed down, no jack rabbit starts etc. The best I've ever gotten was 8.0 going from Cedar City UT to Las Vegas because it's basically all down hill and it's the first time in my life I drove with a tail wind. Anyway, back to the subject, 5W20 huh, OK that's what it's going to be.
Thanks again guys.

As a side note, "Full Synthetic" is not the same as "100% Synthetic" Thats how the oil companies fool you! See ya!

I used the Ford recommended 5-30 for my 2000 v-10 for the first 45k miles. When Ford changed the recommendation to 5-20 I did the first oil change (since 7k when I switched to Amsoil synthetic) at 45k. At about 60k I started using Mobil 1 to add as needed and with filter changes. I changed the synthetic for the second time at 97k when an oil sample report recommended a change. Now have 102k. Recent oil sample shows no signs of wear. Pulled the Grapevine on I-5 today in 105 temp - 42mph in 2nd at 3750 rpm. Same power as first time I pulled it 8 years ago. ScanGuage showed engine water temp at 216 degrees, tranny temp got to 190 degrees.
MH is 2000 Rexhall 35 foot; toad a Jeep Cherokee; CGVW about 25,000; full BANKS system; AMSOIL dual filter system (normal filter - changed at 6-7k miles and .5 micron ByPass filter - changed at 25k miles); tranny has Mobil synthetic; mileage has been 7.75 at 62mph. This year running at 57mph it looks like the year will average 8.5.
