I just came back from a month-long camping trip and noticed a number of RV's, including PUPs, that had carpeting outside the door.
Are you finding that this helps keep the loose dirt out of the camper?
It isn't much of a problem when it's dry, but after a rain, everything sticks to your shoes and the PUP fills up with gravel and leaf litter really quickly.
If it works, does it much matter what kind of carpeting you use?

The carpet that most use is water proof,as it is made of old plastic bottles and has openings between the weave. With an additional foot mat at the landing, yes it dirt stays out. That only works if you are on gravel, crushed stone, concrete or grass. If you are on sand or clay, the rugs don't work, unless you put a tarp under the rug. Then water will sit on it, if it is flat, but in hot climates that usually evaporates.

We use a 4X6 foot piece of indoor/outdoor with a small foot rug on top of that. In addition, we have carpet on the steps leading into the MH. All in all, not much dirt comes in.

Yes, is absolutely helps keep the inside of your camper clean. We had one of the "green grass" type of rugs when we had our TT, but got rid of it fast. It was always holding dirt and mud, a PITA to fold, hard to clean, and hard to carry. We now use a 9'x12' plastic "patio mat" and have been very pleased with it. Just sweep it off, or hose it down to clean, and the dirt just drops through it. The last one I had lasted almost 5 years, and was just replaced last week with a new one that I bought on e-Bay for around $49.00 with free shipping.

We use a 7' x 10' piece of indoor/outdoor carpet (size of the footprint of the screen room) and it really helps keep a lot of the dirt out. Also we remove our footwear too when entering the camper.

We got one of those plastic mats (not the fake grass but the woven kind) and they certainly do help! We also got the plastic "carpet" covers for our steps and that helps as well. Haven't tried to clean the step covers yet, but the mat cleans up really easy.

Much better than that fake grass carpet.

Bear in mind that some parks do not allow them because they kill the grass. If there is no grass, no problem.

We, too, use a piece of 7'x10' indoor/outdoor carpet. We do not stay very long as we are just weekenders for now, so killing the grass is not a problem with us.

If it rained while we were out, I just spray off the top and bottom with a power washer, hang it up to dry, then fold it and stuff it back into storage.

If the campground allows you to use it...use it...it helps. We have an indoor outdoor carpet...it works great.
