Another vote for indoor/outdoor carpet. We got it from one of the "Big Box" stores. We used hot glue to fold the edges over about 2" to make it look good and keep it from fraying. We then put grommets in the corners and sides so we could stake it down. We also made step covers out of it so everything matches. Like a few people have said, some campgrounds do not allow them so be made a smaller one about 2'x4' to put at the bottom step. And yes, they do help to keep the inside from getting dirty. Good Luck

The plastic wave type awning mats do not harm the grass. We spent a week camping in Aug. Not only did we use our awning mat but we also had a tent set up for the grandkids. When we broke camp the grass under the tent was brown and ugly. The area under the awning mat was flattened but still green. The awning mats do not harm the grass because they let water and some sunlight to pass thru, unlike the indoor/outdoor stuff. I have heard, but don't know for sure, that most parks that do not allow the indoor/outdoor, will allow the weaved awning mats.
Another advantage to the plastic awning mats is ease of care. They clean with a simple spray of the hose and dry in no time. When one of the kids spills juice or soda on the mat, I simply pour a little hot water in the same spot to wash it away. If you must pack it away wet, simply fold and put into a plastic garbage bag until you get home and can dry it. Much better than trying to deal with a soggy piece of carpet.
Not only does the awning mat cut down on dirt being tracked in but it also gives the area under your awning, or in your screen room, a comfortable look and feel. We use this area as an extension of our pup, another living area so to speak. A clean, outdoor space for the little ones to play after the shower and before bedtime.
Do you get the idea that I am a fan of the plastic weave awning mats?

trop-a-cal wrote: The carpet that most use is water proof,as it is made of old plastic bottles and has openings between the weave. With an additional foot mat at the landing, yes it dirt stays out. That only works if you are on gravel, crushed stone, concrete or grass. If you are on sand or clay, the rugs don't work, unless you put a tarp under the rug. Then water will sit on it, if it is flat, but in hot climates that usually evaporates.
My plastic RV mat does work well on SAND and CLAY. That is the main reason we got ours, because we camp a lot where it is sand and/or dirt. It lets the dirt and sand fall through and does not hold it. If that dirt and sand is wet, it sweeps right off.

I have a rule - no shoes in the camper.
Have a strip of indoor/outdoor carpet leading to the entry step, shoes go on one side, a dishpan of water is on the other....for foot rinsing before entry.
I do have a carpet runner in the aisle of the PUP, and it does require vacuuming regularly, even with the foot wash, etc.

We are also very happy with the 9x12 woven patio mat. Having it under the awning helps keeping it clean and dry as well. For those quick overnighters when we do a minimal set-up, we also have a smaller version that was sold as a sun-bathing mat. Its about 2-1/2' x 6' when unrolled. Something smaller like that might work for those campgrounds that have issues with large mats on the ground.
Here's a link to a similar beach mat:

I purchased a 5'x7' green turf rug for $15 at the orange big box. I haven't "finished" off the edges and might eventually.
I would definitely say it's a "must". I have cut an area rug to exactly fit the floorplan for inside the PUP. It's a bit harder to keep clean than the vinyl flooring from the manufacturer, so anything that cuts down on the debris helps. The indoor carpet gives a warmer feel when barefoot (as we are inside the PUP), and does help retain some heat.
I noticed that the green turf rug developed a mildew odor the first time out, even though it was allowed to dry completely before we even left. The odor has stayed with it, and I've not cared enough to spend much effort on a $15 rug. I will probably toss it next season and get one of the woven plastic mats.
But, even still, it has well been worth it.

We have a "RV Patio Mat" that works great. Sweeps clean while camping, folds easily, light weight and hoses clean. Keeps a lot of dirt out of the camper. I fold it up and store it in a large garbage bag. The mats hold much less water and dry faster than carpet. Highly recommended!

RV Patio mats (the woven ones made from recycled plastic)are the bomb. This was the first thing I bought when we got the Pop up. Our first trip without it saw me and the DW sweeping every 30 minutes. After we got the mat it is more like once a day and even then it is much less dirt. They weigh about 4 pounds and fold up very easily with one person. They are awsome in sandy areas and never load up with sand. We had a dog digging insedent that left grass and mud on one section but 30 seconds with the broom had us clean again.
They work great and I think I got mine at Campersworld for about $65. Well worth the money.
I have used indoor outdoor carpet before, but it loads up with dirt, and you really can't fold it as well. And they hold moisture. There is no comparison IMHO.

YES! We have used this type of carpet outside of all our PUPs since we first started to camp! And we have been camping now for over 28+ years. It most certainly cuts down on the dirt going into the camper. Also you can sweep the dirt off easily and hose it down (if needed) to get mud off and it dries really quickly.
We also have a small rug inside the PUP right at the door...for a final wipe of the feet.
HAPPY CAMPING!!

Homedepot sells the green in door out door carpet and will cut to your size. I have an 8'x 16' piece and it surely reduced the dirt inside my tt.
