If you like it lite, Acer & Asus make 9" models that come with XP or Linux. Most popular softwares (Internet browser, Messenger, Skype ...) come pre-installed. They are cheap (300-400$), and best of all, if they are hit by a virus, there is an option to restore to factory default, wipe out any changes made to the computer.
Avoid 7" models, they are very hard to read, especially for old eyes like mine.

We use the Dell 6000. It worked great, then upgraded to the newest Norton firewall and it slowed way down. Upgraded from 512 meg to 2 gig, and it's up and running again. What ever you buy, get as much Ram as you can, it will make it easier down the road.

Best one I've had is my Acer 500 buck special from walmart. I've had HP and Dell. Neither lasted long.

I think the best one is the brand I use, but that's just my opinion. Aren't you glad you asked the Ford or Chevy question of computers? I must have missed the reply saying to get a Mac...

So, who has the best daylight readable screen? I have a heck of a time seeing the map on a sunny day.

Dell, HP, lenovo, toshiba...pop the hood and what do you find...parts made by third party technology manufacturers. Forget the name for now. What are you going to be using it for? Prioritize the list by importance and frequency of use. Next, where are you going to be using it? Mostly always plugged into power, or more times than not on battery? Third, is a warranty important to you? Are you apt to extend it for a more worry-free ownership. Finally, what type of computing environment are you most comfortable with (if any); Windows, Apple, Linux, etc. Now take that list to two or three of your largest local chains and show it to them. Ask to see two possible "best fits" to your list. Do NOT make a decision until you have visited all of the locations on your list. What you end up with might surprise you. It might be a Dell, HP, or other manufacturer mentioned in this forum but it will do what you want it to do, where you want to do it, and for how long. I also guarantee you that you won't have to pay a lot of money for it either. Unless you want to be going through this in another twelve to eighteen months, do the important homework. Don't buy it just because it has ACER on the lid or it's shiney.

Do you remember when photographers had those big cameras on wooden tripods and used a black hood that covered their head and the viewfinder?
Out in the boat on a sunny day, I have seen several people use a towel like that to read their cell phone.

I use a Leveno/IBM Thinkpad.. Why, simple
At one time you could get laptops with a small mini-track ball.
Or you could get laptops with what the Thinkpad users call an "Eraser head" joystick
or you could get laptops with glide pads
NO MORE...
Glide pads are the only way most companies sell 'em
Leveno, (And IBM earlier) being the last hold out with the TrackPoint (Eraser head)
I HATE GLIDE PADS

I've been driving around with a 2002 Toshiba Satellite on my dashboard, on and running my GPS software all day long. Six years later it's still working.
