I have an external generator safely attached to the outside rear of my RV on a platform. Is is alright to extend and plug the RV cord to it and run the generator while in transit? The cord would extend about 6 feet outside to reach the generator outlet. I would of course find a way to secure the cord.

I am only asking this because my older RV does not have a console/dash air conditioner and I could run the roof top one via the generator.

Thanks,

I don't see any problem with it functionally since motorhomes with an installed genny do it all the time....Brian

I have friends that fish in Canada and they run the external generator in the bed of their truck, all the way back to California...
every summer with NO problems.

Just make sure that everything is secure and let her run...

Should have no problem. Make sure all of your detectors have new batteries.

I too see no problem with it provided you can secure the cord properly.

That's the only problem I can see

If you need to run the cord along the side consider putting a portal (Deck plate with screw out) in the floor of the power compartment and running below the rig

The only other problem is if you get smucked in the rear with a running motor and a tank of fuel. But that danger is minor.. I hope

I've actually seen 2 different RVs with contractor gens on a bumper hitch, running when pulling into reststops. One cord ran into the rear window with some foam, I'm guessing to either keep fumes out or cold in. Not sure where the other's cord ran to.

I would start another EXTERNAL generator thread but the moderators may choke me.

Is it alright to have these generators exposed to the elements (rain etc.) once in awhile?

I run mine in the truck bed to have the ac going before I arrive if its hot out. I have never had them out in bad weather though. They had a good workout this week when Ike came through and knocked out all power. Who would have thought a hurricane in Ohio!

I built a platform to fit the trailer hitch on the back of a Class C and put an external generator there. Wiring was secured under the MH. Worked for me.
Never tried to use it during inclement weather.
