From the Manchester NH Union Leader:
Moose are on the move in NH
By DAN TUOHY

Moose are a big hit this time of year.

New Hampshire State Police had already reported a handful of moose collisions in the North Country coming into September.

And now comes "the rut." In the breeding season, which extends from mid-September through mid-October, bulls and cows travel more in hot pursuit of a mate.

The largest wild animal in North America is a popular tourist attraction and a major driver distraction. In the past five years, New Hampshire has averaged 230 collisions a year.

"It is important for people to be vigilant," said Liza Poinier, a spokeswoman for the state Fish and Game Department. "This time of year the moose are starting to get very active."

With adult moose weighing an average 1,000 pounds, the slogan "Brake for Moose: It could save your life" is no joke. Motorists statewide should be on the lookout, say the experts at the state Fish and Game Department.

From police reports, recent moose accidents include:

Aug. 26 at 5:30 a.m.: Shawn McKenzie, 24, of Milan, collision with a moose in front of him in Pinkham's Grant. No injuries; vehicle towed.
Aug. 26 at 6:55 a.m.: Bridget Gagne, 25, of Berlin, collision with a moose that ran out in front of her, struck it. No injuries; vehicle towed.
Aug. 27 at 12:25 p.m.: Richard R. Devanney, 43, of Lawrence, Mass., crashed into a ditch on Route 16 in Errol after attempting to avoid a moose. No injuries reported.
Aug. 29 at 2 p.m.: Ronald Fredette, 53, of Berlin, struck a bear while driving east on Route 2 in Jefferson. No injuries; vehicle towed from scene.
Aug. 30 at 9:20 p.m.: Rachel Hechtman, 19, of West Hartford, Conn., struck a moose on Route 118 in Dorchester. No injuries reported.
Aug. 31 at 4:39 p.m.: Christian Gravel, 47, of Sherbrook, Quebec, struck a moose when it darted in front of his vehicle on Route 26 in Dixville. No injuries.

We have a few here in Maine, too. Striking one with your car or truck can ruin your whole day, and the mooses'. Motorcycles even worse (you've heard about bikers with flies on their teeth?, try moose guts wrapped around their head after paunching one at high speed). Five people died in Maine in '07 hitting moose on the highway.

The other thing to remember, even if it is not during the rut, is that a moose can be a animal with a nasty temper. While animals like a mountain lion or bear will want to avoid you a moose can be the opposite. You may walk near one and they will just watch you. Then suddenly they will charge just because they want to mess with you. They figure that I can kick your butt so I am going to just do that.

An expression that I heard was flight or fight. A mountain lion or bear will want to take flight but a moose will want to stay and fight.

Moose are extremely DUMB. Hence, unpredictable. If you see a moose on the edge of the highway, it's smart to assume it'll step out in front of your vehicle. Brake and use caution.

I've had them in front of the truck on narrow, dirt roads, and they won't get out of the way. And when you finally pass them, they have the nasty habit of kicking the truck. You'll be fined for harassing them if you keep blowing the horn!

True story: Maine moose expert went to a small town because a moose was loose. He got between the cow and her calf, and she killed him. So, if an "expert" can get killed....

Nothing like that feeling of just missing a 700lb moose at 50mph.Happened to me and a couple hunting buddies.During the rut season anything goes, they move around protecting thier territory.A car is just another animal in thier way to mate.
