Go on line and check Key West Naval Air Station. Last I knew and saw they had 2 RV parks, Sigsbee with lots of hookups and the overflow location at Trumbo which is dry camping but much closer (walking distance) to downtown. There is a waiting list for hookup sites but they have prided themselves on never having to turn away anyone for lack of space. I have never seen rank enter into the situation at all. Call them, you may find that you can get preference for full hookups since you are active duty (at least in my opinion you should).

I am planning a vacation in the 5-15 December 2008 time, for the Florida Keys.

First, let me thank you for your service to our Country. As far as your R&R, my husband and I spent Christmas week on Key Largo one year, and it was wonderful. We stayed at America Outdoors on the bayside, beautiful beach, and a tiki bark. Don't know what it's like these days because that was back in the early 90s. You could try this list of parks Key Largo Parks

We took a ride down through all the keys to Key West. The Keys are expensive, and the closer you get (if you can get a reservation) to Key West, itself, it gets more expensive. Here's another list you might look at. I think it's going to be tough to get a reservation this late, but perhaps if you mention that you're on R&R they'll make an exception for one of Ameria's finest. I'd gladly give up my site for you. Good Luck and have a wonderful time. Again, thank you for your service.

Again, thanks for your service. Look at Trumbo and Sigsbee. They're about $15 a night and the civilian ones are about $75 and UP, UP, UP.

Go to www.militarycampgrounds.us for phone numbers and full info on the campgrounds worldwide run by the military.

Have fun.

I would at least check. Some friends of ours said that they were instituting time limits because too many were taking advantage and staying for a season which meant a lot of military couldn't get in at all. And as the poster above says, perhaps they give preference for active duty, since they aren't as flexible time wise. They should.

The last time I was at Naval station Key West (Sigbee), two years ago, active duty had head of line privileges for FHU and very seldom waited longer than 1 day. Active duty was also exempt from the 14 day limit in FHU, with CO approval. There are 2 sections to Sigbee and then they have Trumbo Field, so you never have to wait for a space. We always bypass Sigbee, even if available and go straight to Trumbo Field, so we can walk to town. The base also has a marina with boat rentals for fishing and sightseeing.

I appreciate all the info. I found Sigsbee on the miliary RV site. Says that Active duty can make reservations 3 months out, all others cannot make reservations, so hopefully there isnt a bunch of other Active guys traveling same time as me...and the website is up to date.

Just in case though, if I need to look at a private location who is recommended for a nice place that allows pets? My dogs are old 11 & 12yrs, and arenet much of ankel biters as you can see in my sig by their breed. I certainly appreciate everyone's support as it has been expressed. I dont mind having to pay to camp, as that is what ya gotta do when not boondocking. My wife and I love to travel and see the US, I like to camp, she likes showers, so the happy medium hooks up to the truck, and we get out as often as we can.

Everyones opinion on this is useful and appreciated, and to be honest for a nice RV park anywhere from the S tip of FL to the S tip of the keys is good for us. I actually prefer a civilian location, as I am surrounded by military all day everyday, and part of vacation is getting away from the military. I know it may cost me, but it is what it is, who wants to go camping with the people they work with when you only get 1 vacation a year? .......However, if it is all that is avail, I will be there with wife, and dogs in tow

Well if cost isn't the deciding factor Blue Water Key, is my first choice. For a taste of the old keys try Geiger Key Marina. Very friendly group of campers. Old time water front cafe with entertainment 4 nights a week. Some of the sites are bulkhead frontage on the water with dockage. Fish in front of your RV.

Sorry I can't help with any CG info but I can recommend outdoor cafe called Caroline's which is on Duval Street in Key West. It serves one mighty fine shrimp hoagie and a huge BLT.. Hope you find a CG that suits you..and, as said above, thanks for your service to our country and welcome home!

OK, I got reservations at Sigsbee, as they were the only ones that I could get a guranteed spot. From the reviews I have read about it, Sigsbee is a nice location, and at $20.00 per night, I guess I really cant go wrong.

OK onto the FUN questions.....
1. Wife and I scuba Dive, I spearfish as well, what/who is the recommended businesses to spend my money at?

2. We have never been to the keys Before, so what activities, attractions, events or locations should we ensure we visit?

3. On our way into or out of Florida, what are some "must visit" locations? We have done disney before. I have about 2 weeks to fill and I am planning on 7 days in the Keys.

4. Anyone know if the Marlin or Sailfish are running in Dec? I would love to go hook into one of them beasts.

Thanks for the info, and dont hesitate to let me know of any hole in the wall or other great places to eat, visit, etc. THANKS!!!!!
