Sounds about right. I have a smaller engine and get 14mpg city and about 17 mpg highway, towing is around 10mpg.

Running to and from work I get 20-22 MPG, The diesel will save you fuel when running empty, as well as loaded. This is why I question those that say unless you tow a lot a diesel is not worth the upgrade cost. I feel the added MPG has paid for the diesel, and I will enjoy a much higher resale valve.

You FEEL that the added MPG has paid for the diesel, but have you actually sat down to figure it out?

With $4 gas and $5 diesel, 15MPG with the gas and 20MPG with the diesel, it's only slightly better than a wash on fuel costs. It will take a loooooooong time to offset the $8000+ cost of the Duramax/Allison package on a Chevy at that rate, and if you think you're going to get $8000 more for your truck at resale time, think again. Used diesels are bigger dogs on the market than gassers right now, and as long as fuel prices stay over $3 a gallon (i.e. forever), and the EPA keeps putting in regulations that kill diesel fuel economy, they will remain that way.

When I bought my truck diesel was cheaper than gas. For the last couple years diesel has been more than gas, now there about the same. There was never a time when I saw diesel $1.00 more than gas. The fuel economy is only part of the reason to buy diesel, power was my main goal. The diesel was closer to a $5,000 option, not the $8,000 you say.

Sounds about right to me. My 2000 Burb 2500 4x4 with 6.0 and 3.73 gears gets about 9-10 towing and around 12-13 not towing. Best ever not towing was 14.6 mpg on flat ground running about 65mph.

15 mpg not loaded, what kind of driving? Urban/suburban sitting at traffic lights 50% of the time, that's not bad. My 22 mpg rated minivan wouldn't do better under those condtions. For another 1-2 mpg, try turning off the air conditioner.

Running 45-55 mph on the highway, 15 mpg is bad. I would hope for at least 16, maybe 18 at the lower end of that speed range. 75-85 mph on the highway, 15 mpg is great, any full size pickup.

I dream about getting 15 mpg....best I can do is 14 on the hiway and about 11-12 in town....towing about 9 or less....as low as 7.

The 6.0 and the 4.10 is a combo for a thirsty truck....no doubt about it. My HD 2500 wieghts more than your 1500, so we are in the same ball park, just in different seats.

As already said, don't believe ANYTHING you read, especially on public internet forums like this, about mileage figures. Asking a bunch of truck owners in a public forum about mileage....Well, its like asking a bunch of fisherman who has caught the biggest fish. How does the ol' saying go, about "First liar doesn't stand a chance.."

Just 'cause someone claims on the internet that they pull a 12,000 lb trailer up an 18% incline going 70 mph with a 6.0 V8 gasser and got 35 mph doing it, does NOT mean they have, or that its even possible.

That said, your mileage towing, sounds 'bout right. Unloaded does sound a little low, but there's so many factors that enter into that, it may or may not be low. What kind of driving (city or highway), how its driven, etc. With that truck I bet unloaded mileage could be as high as 18 or as low as 13, depending on several things.

I think a few quotes from this thread, kinda sum this up well:

Quote:

Between you and me, many lie about their MPG

Quote:

There's one other thing you can do to improve MPG but it doesn't help the wallet. Lie about it.

Yep, why not. Thats what so many do, especially on public forums. Why, this may be one of them now:

Anyway, happy camping.

Thats my quote running to and from work, and it is true. I drive 45-55, look ahead for stops, and get in 6th gear by 35 MPH. I have nothing to gain by making tales of high hileage. If you chose to not believe it I suspect that is one of the reasons you will always drive a gasser, and I will never consider a gasser. I ordered this truck for power, towing ability, and fuel economy. The 6 speed manual, 3:73 gears, diesel, and 2 wheel drive were all for fuel economy considerations. The dually was selected for towing, and payload. The diesel for power, and fuel economy. First time I talked to a Dodge Cummins diesel owner I didn't believe his claimed MPG either, all I ask if you have no experience with this engine, look into it more before deciding I am not being truthful. Best I ever got out of my previous 7.3 diesel was 14MPG, but it had a 4:10 ratio, and a 5 speed.

Same can be said for those of us who are happy with our gassers. Especially those of us who have owned several diesels in the mix and know first hand what they're capable of. Yes, driving the way you do and the speeds you drive, 20-22mpg is very possible. I also have nothing to gain by making tales of high mileage. I'm paying for the fuel. If it were as bad as some insist, I would have already traded it for Cummins number five.

To the original poster "NORTSTAR":

What yer gitting in MPG is all that you can realistically expect; you've gotten that message here by now on that subject I'm sure. No one buy's a diesel truck simply for the small increase in MPG over that of a comparable gasser. You buy a diesel for the ton's of grunt & longevity you git from a diesel. The small betterment in MPG is simply not worth it alone to decide on a diesel over a gasser. As for initial cost of a diesel over a gasser, it's all relative: You pay more for a diesel up front and recoup it at trade in or sell time down the road. Good luck.

Happy camping!!! See ya'll down the road!!!

Okay, I'll ask. Why would people "lie" about their fuel mileage?
