DW and I are about 24 months from full timing and I wondered if anybody had any experience with using public libraries while being at a location for a month or so? I'm an avid reader and don't want to have to purchase books to read.

You need to be a resident in the library district and have a card to check out books. You can sit and read all you want.

We often stop at libraries for the internet access.

Maybe you should inquire about short-term borrowing policies. Libraries probably have different policies from place to place.

I have found many places that would issue a library card while camping. Some require a deposit. Call the ones you want to use to find out their requirements.

In the 2 years we've been traveling, we've only used public libraries 2 or 3 times but have never had any problems with access. That said, we have never tried to check out any books. We go in to use the wi-fi or their workstations if they are hard wired. Those libraries have always accepted our out-of-state (to them) library cards.

You might check to see if your local library belongs to an interlibrary system of some kind. If they do, and if it includes some out-of-state libraries, you perhaps could use those libraries when you're in their areas. Also, many libraries have lots of used books for sale, very cheap (I think ours charges 50 cents), and an increasing number of CGs have book exchanges available. My DH reads constantly, and has been kept happy with these last 2 sources, at very low cost.

FatBoy, this question has come up a couple times so you might want to do a search here. To get it started again ...

Some places allow you to get a library card w/ only ID, not proof of local residency. We have several from CA counties. Other areas (OR & WA) will 'rent' you a temp card for a 3 month season (~$20).

You will find most CG (private & membership ones, not state/fed. prks.) usually have a book swap in the clubhouse/laundry (take one - leave one). Not always the choicest material - lots of romance, but one or two gems will fall your way. Otherwise, look for used book stores. Ran into a woman one time who found a store that sold paparbacks for a buck a pound. If you have the storage and wt. capacity, that's when you stock up.

Some folks like eBooks (Amazon Kandle, etc.), but I prefer a real book to snuggle up with. I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions. Good luck!

We stop at librarys often on our trips. Some have books that they nolonger want and you can take them. Most CG have a take one leave one book exchange. There should be a problem getting books to read.
You can also get books at thrift shops.

We don't usually stay put for a long time so I've never checked into getting a library card but we do read a lot. We need a steady supply of
inexpensive books. I found this website awhile ago and we have been able to use it twice so far. http://www.booksalefinder.com/

We do it all the time. Some places make you pay a fee for the card and some won;t allow it at all, but a lot of them do.

Also, we utilize the used bookstores (trade-in), and the book swap libraries at the campgrounds as well.
