Our big 45th Anniversary outing.
The DW has always wanted to go up into the New England area and we have just never gone in that direction. So my two daughters and I have secretly got us lined up with a flight into Boston on the 7th of October. We have a rental car reserved for pick up at the airport.
We fly out of Boston on the 14th of October. I would have much rather taken the motor home up there, but it would have taken us much longer travel time and it would have been quite costly to drive.
We dispise living out of suitcases, but guess that we can manage for a few days.
Now the big decision is on where all to try to go and what to see and do in that 6 or 7 day period.
I was originally going to wait until the last day or two before I told the DW about this trip, but the daughters convinced me that I should tell her well in advance so that she can do any last minute shopping and preparing to go, before I just drop this news on her.
So I did present her with this news last evening.
She was totally baffled about the trip and surprised that we had done all this without letting her know. Now she is trying to brainstorm this trip concept and think all about what we should take and what we should try to do.
I had gathered up a bunch of assorted information about that region so that we could plot out a rough agenda.
Now we are having problems trying to decide where we should go first and what all we should try to do.
I realize that we will not have sufficient time to see or visit the entire area or do everything that there is available to do.
Any other suggestions or recommended routes to follow or ones to avoid would be great appreciated.
We are not certain now about our clothing requirements in that area at that time of the year. We are presuming that sweaters and jackets
would be nice to have. That is rather hard to believe since we are still wearing shorts and sandals here in the Kansas City area.
Thanks for your ideas and recommendations.

We live about 12 miles west of Boston and I had an extended response to your post, but the Forum kept sending it back as an "invalid format.) PM me if you want some suggestions.

Hi
This is a link to a post that I made in July 2006. I have not check the links since then. As I stated in the post, start with the Duck Tour. I would make reservations well in an advance. I know I missed a few locations, so hopefully others can fill them in.
Enjoy
Paul
PS I tried copying it and the post was rejected.

Walk the Freedom Trail. It's a 2.5 mile trail that runs from Boston Commons over to Charlestown where the USS Constitution is docked. Just follow the red-bricks in the sidewalks as the trails takes you by all the famous sites in town. I walked the entire trail and took the ferry back from the Navy Yard back to downtown, and then jumped on the T back to the hotel.

Clothing: Everything. I could be hot, it could be could, it could be somewhere in between. Bring layers. You probably won't need shorts but I'd bring a pair or two just in case. Ideas:
Duck Tour
Freedom Trail
Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market
Aquarium
Lexington and Concord
Minuteman National Park
Day trip down the Cape
Tour Fenway Park
Visit the USS Consitution
Eat at Durgin Park, Union Oyster House, Legal Seafood (be prepared for sticker shock)
Walk the waterfront
Museum of Science
Still thinking. Will get back to ya.
Life is too short to spend it all in one place!

Are you spending the entire week in Boston proper?
You can book your Duck Tour online.
Take the T - Boston drivers are agggressive. Lots of circles. (Roundabouts)
See the suburbs
Go to Harvard - in Cambridge
Go to Newbury St.
Top of the Hancock Building
Back Bay
Beacon Hill
Boston Common - will the swan boats be available in October?
Fenway Park - Red Sox baseball
Did you like "Cheers?" Go to the Bull and Finch
I doubt you will need shorts either.
Happy Anniversary!
My husband says if you like basketball, go see the statue of Red Auberbach near Quincy Market. (Big whip ) He likes it, mainly because he really met Red while he was sitting there.

Go up in the Prudential Building to see the sites from on high. We did this AFTER our city tour and it was a great reminder of all we had seen on our trip. You do need a ticket to enter - maybe $10 each.

The Pru is better now. I forgot they closed the Hancock after 9/11.
I thought of more.
The North End for Italian food and Anthony's Pier 4 for seafood - and the best popovers ever! More sticker shock as Lori mentioned but worth it.
While in the North End go to Old North Church (One if by land, two if by sea...) The tour of the church does cost something. $8? Of course, if you do the Freedom Trail you will see that.

Try to drive as little as possible in the city of Boston - walk or use public transportation instead. This is what PRT was referring to. Quote: Take the T - Boston drivers are agggressive. Lots of circles. (Roundabouts)
Not mentioned, but worthwhile if you have the time, is the House of Seven Gables (think Hawthorne) - north of Boston (in Salem?? it's been too long since I was there!) Also Lexington & Concord. I sure second the recommendation for walking the Freedom Trail!
It's probably not the season, but if it is, the Boston Pops put on fantastic concerts!

Indeed I did mean that My husband loved driving in Boston. Our oldest daughter went to BC (Boston College) and we were there a lot in those four years. Great city.
The Hawthorne House is in Salem and there's a ferry over. Salem is the witch place! Good month to go. Salem Haunted Happenings.
I think we need to go back to Boston!
