I live about 6 blocks away from a WalMart, which in turn is just a couple of miles from Canada's main road....the Trans Canada # 1.

For the past 10 years or so I would see anywhere from about 2 to upwards of 10 RV units of all kinds (no tents, though) camping over night at the local WalMart, during the May to Sept. period.

This past year, there has been a marked and significant downward change in the # of overnight campers at this lot.

Most nights, not a one, some nights, maybe 2, probably the top night about 3.

I have also noted significantly less RV's on the highways I have traveled this summer. Those roads being main roads across the Prairies, interstates and main highways in the Dakotas and Minnesota.

Is this a phenomena that just pertains to my regional area...Western Canada and a couple of Northern (Western/ Mid Western) states ?

Or what ?

Not just your area... here in the S.E. travel was significantly down. On I-75 I have noticed a big decline in Class A's especially....... just too expensive to travel far.

We drove from Florida to Alaska. At times we were the only one on the road. Never had to make a reservation at a campground. We stayed at Fred Myers two different nights. There were a few others with us mostly Germans or French. I did see some overnighters at Walmart, but some Walmarts had changed there overnight policy due to pressure from local politics. Some campgrounds said they were down 40% or more. Ed

Maybe because of the high costs in Canada, the people who are STILL RVing, decided to RV in the lower 48 and Mexico?

we met people from canada who were taking the southern route. even with the extra miles with the price of gas it was cheaper. that was late may/early june and the loonie was worth more then too.

We have not traveled at all this year for many reasons, but we have been parked at our site in Linville, NC. We visit almost every weekend.

I am currently on a business trip in Germany and I was amazed to see about 50 RVs this past Saturday.

I have noticed a few MORE folks are parking at our chinamart.

TWO pulled in the other night between the time we went in and when we left.
(11:45 til 1:30) we shop late at night cause of crowds.

Looks like either folks doing the "end of season shuffle", or snowbirds returning for the winter.

Also could be refugees from hurricanes.

In a few more weeks we will start to see RVs at the interstate about 12 miles from where we live. In the summer it is too hot to overnite in the parking lot of the WalMart (or any other parking lot for that matter). Now we are having temps in the low 60s and 50s at night.
My wife and I have a standing quiz just before we get there - yes or no - as to whether or not there will be an RV(s) in the parking lot. ALWAYS trucks however.
