We live on the So Cal coast but are open to all options. We are Oregon transplants so very much into Mountains and lakes. We were even looking at National Forests as an option. I am not too crazy about the idea of a crowded RV park--I like the privacy of wooded camp areas. Thanks for your thoughts...Barb

Barb --

Shasta is a heck of a long way for a 5 day trip -- for a quick getaway from southern Calif, maybe think about Giant Sequoia Natl Monument -- the aspens are changing -- we were there last year at this time. There were snow flurries -- very unusual -- check out our blog:

Giant Sequoia

We stayed at Quaking Aspen -- very quiet campground. But if you are in a big rig, the road is sort of twisty. Maybe consider Azalea campground near Grant Grove in Sequoia National Forest -- 180 is a much easier road.

Either way, those places are just a few hours from Malibu! And real mountains and real trees.

Thank you so much for the suggestion of Giant Sequoia Nat'l Monument. I haven't been nor had I considered the Sierras! We will definitely look into this! 12 hours was going to make a long day from Malibu to Lake Siskiyou! Thanks again!!

most RV parks/resorts rarely have sites like the state parks. they have much smaller sites and they are closer together.
nearly all Calif. state parks don't have hookups of any kind, unlike the Oregon state parks. the few that do, are extremely hard to get reservations at.

i would suggest some of the state/national parks in NW Calif. from
we just got back from one of our favorites, Prairie Creek SP, in the Redwood National Park. there are Roosevelt elk there and Fern Canyon is a wonder to see. there are other parks in the area that are great, such as Patrick's Point SP and Jedediah Smith SP.
the North Coast of Calif. is a great place to explore.

What size is your RV? That might help determine your destination, especially with the state parks. We stayed this summer at Lodgepole in Sequoia. Beautiful! Our 32-foot Class C was a tight fit in our space. Just ask the park before making reservation. If you ever want to stay at a commercial park, we enjoy Flying Flags in Buellton and Pismo Coast RV Village -- both an easy drive from SoCal.

Thank you to all for your suggestions--especially Profdant139! We got back on Friday from a trip to Sequoia National Park! We had borrowed a 31 ft RV from a a friend and now we are shopping for a 21 ft Chinnook because there were so many places we would have loved to explore but not able to do in an RV of this size.

We started in Lodgepole which was beautiful and had some lovely trails but we have dogs and so this was something we had to skip! However, this campgound reminded me of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon so I felt a bit homesick! We opted to walk the 3 miles up the road to see the General Sherman Giant Sequoia. My sweetie ended up sitting with the dogs while I did the 1/2 mile hike in to see this tree! In the meantime, he ended up being the tourist attraction with all kinds of people taking his photo with the dogs--who knew?

We left from here and went to the Big Meadow campground in the Sequoia forest. We were at 7500 ft and loving this site because it was just us and a few scattered hunters. A beautiful place to hike with your dogs. The meadows seem to go on for miles and there is a challenging 2.5 mile hike to a lake. Unfortunately, it is all uphill and after an hour of walkimg thru the woods and meadows, I was tired and couldn't cope with the altitude after we hit 8200 ft. So, we took lots of photos and I made a vow to come back and do the hike to its completion!

From Big Meadows, we were supposed to hit Azalea Campground to see that gorgeous sunset, but the weather was predicting snow Friday night into Sat morning and neither of us felt like driving thru this with someone else's rig. So, were headed back to the beach!

There were so many places to see and so much to do in this park! And, yes, lots of trees!! There are some wonderful spots if you don't want to see other people and you are completely self contained. We will defintely do this again next year, but hopefully in something smaller so we can see more of the park! Thanks again for all your suggestions!!

I live in Visalia which is a short trip to the Sequoia's. I actually have never been yet, but mostly becasue I have a 31 foot trailer with a big truck. Not sure if I could get it up there.

I also have 2 suggestions that would be close as well. We like going up to Shaver Lake even for a quick weekend getaway. The first campground is Camp Edison which is owned by SCE power company and has full hook ups. It takes us ab out 2 hours or so to get there from visalia.

Camp Edison at Shaver Lake

The second is Wishon Village which is not far from Shaver. It has full hookups and takes about 3 hours from Visalia. We stayed there last week but had to cut our trip a little short due to our 7 year old getting croup and having to get transported to Valley Childrens Hospital ER....which on a sidenote also had full hookups...go figure.

Here is a link for Wishon Village....

We are always looking for nice campgrounds as well since California is so big. We lived in the desert (Borrego Springs) for 5 years and also like it down there. This summer we;d like to take a week long trip or so somewhere in Northern California. Maybe moderators could have a topic for camping in California where we could exchange ideas and whatnot specific to California camping etc......just a thought
