Our 12 year old male seems to be having a problem getting rid of a hairball. He hacks, but only brings up his latest meal or clear saliva.
Yesterday I tried putting kitty malt on his paws - even tried 2 different brands - and he is stubborn and refuses to lick it off. He did have a B.M., although smaller than usual, so some stuff is getting through. I am wondering if mixing a small amount of olive oil in some wet food would help him move this hairball. Normally he doesn't have a problem. He does get brushed every day and regularly eats Iams Hairball kibble.

I haven't tried the olive oil routine - with as fussy as cats are about eating, that may or may not work. You could try mixing the hairball gel with his food too and see if that helps. If this continues for several days, I'd see a vet; in the meantime, hang in there - good luck! (My cats have done this kind of thing periodically too.)

Try putting the kitty malt or vasoline on his nose, I promise, he will lick it off.

I have "picky" cats. The only treats they eat are Whiska Temptations. They have a "hairball control" one. This might help.

I get mine at grocery stores, pet stores, etc. They are about $2-3 bag depending on size and sales.

Here is a link to some reviews on amazon:

The hairball issues for our cats really became non-issues once I bought and used the Furminator. I swear the first time I used it, I almost threw away a whole cat there was SO MUCH fur it took off - yet my cat wasn't bald! I also noticed that there was a LOT less fur everywhere. Though slightly expensive it is worth every penny!

Vaseline on the nose does the trick, and we have 4 cats at the stick house.

Bamboo brand makes a knock off of the furminator, that costs half as much ($20 bucks) at Walmart. I don't have one but a friend who'd tried a real furminator, loved it, but not wanted to break the bank on it, tried the knock-off and says it works the same, she's very satisfied.

we starting giving our cat Libby pumpkin pie mix (not the kind with the pet milk already in it) and it works great! He actually likes it and comes to get us and takes us to the refrig when he wants more.

Thanks to all for the various suggestions. I learned a few new ones! Our dear cat seems to be back to normal today, although we never found a hairball. We're assuming he hacked it up outside somewhere instead of his usual spot which is always on the carpet - never the tile floor!

haha. I put the hairball gel on my kitty's paw -- thinking she would lick it off in a lady like manner ....and she promptly shook her paw vigorously and FLICKED it all over my wall.
