We have just bought a fiver with a slide..Love it to death, but,it does not have an awning over the slideout..Should I be concerned about this...Am I at more risk of water damage without one???

You can get one installed aftermarket if you wish; we did. Although it seems that leaking around slides isn't real common, if you camp in areas where you are likely to get leaves & other debris collecting on the slide, a topper can help reduce that (perhaps even eliminate it, though some will dispute that.)

No. You don't see that many slides with awnings over them. I have never owned a trailer with them on and really see no need for one unless maybe you camp a lot under trees with falling debris!

You have nothing to worry about. The use of awnings over the slid has only recently become common. I would wage a small amount that more trailers still come without slid awnings than come with them. In fact many people actually have them removed if they camp in windy areas and the awnings flap a lot.

I had a awning topper over my slide and the wind caused it to flap so much it finely tore off. I never replaced it nor do I miss it

I also had awnings on my other 5th wheel and the wind and the sun played havoc on them and they are expensive to replace. The camper I have now did not come with them and it is doing just fine. I do sweep the slides off if I camp in a bunch of shade and the leaves are falling. No leaking problems eather.

Agree with other poster. Have not had slide toppers on last two trailers over 5 years and never a problem. If I am parked under pine trees or heavily treed area I will go up and push off the debris.

I also dont have an awning over my slide and after seeing the hassles they can cause I don't really have a desire to get one. After a good windstorm I was walking the dogs the next morning and observing the RV repairmen in the park replacing overslide awninga as well as others Regular awnings that people hadn't closed up.
I find that it is very easy to clean the top of the slide before retracting it. I do this with a small electric leaf blower. I have a 15 foot awning and by placing my steep ladder in the middle of the slide I am able to blow the debris esch way to get rid of it. If the top is wet I jack my uint so the front is slightly higher than the back and the water will run off.

Knock on wood, but camping with our fiver these past 10 years, WITH A SLIDE AWNING, we have never experienced any problem with it. No flapping, leaves, Water, ETC. Would order the same option again.
