Wall Drug is a tourist trap in Wall, SD, of all places. years ago they put out "free ice water" signs all over the upper midwest, place grew and grew and grew. after passing by a dozen times I finally stopped. wouldn't do that again. just a big assortment of "stuff" for sale.

One of my favorite places in the area was the Mammoth Dig Site south of Custer SP. If you like archeology, it's a cool place to visit!!

If you have kids stop at Wall Drug, they have added a lot of neat stuff. We just returned from the trip you are proposing, Sturgis, Deadwood ( you can skip, they have built a parking lot at Rushmore, costs $10, Crazy Horse is wonderful but pricy, you can see it from the road. We spent most of the day there this time. Custer State park with the Needles and 16 A are great. We did Wind cave this time, others said Jewel is nicer but wind is interesting. Badlands are beautiful and you can do that area if you stop at Wall. In fact you can stop at Wall and drive through the Badlands on the way to Rapid City. If you go to Sturgis the week before or during bike week any campground other than a state park west of Rapid City is well over $100 a night and they want you to book a week. Try to stay at least 5 days. We stayed 5 days this time and a week the last time and still haven't seen it all. Have a great time.

4 days no way to enjoy the area in that short amount of time. Might as well just Google Earth it and save the fuel.

We were just in South Dakota last month. We spent 9 days total to get from Chicago to Black Hills area to Yellowstone/Grand Teton, then back to Black Hills and on to Chicago. I'd say we spent a total of 3-1/2 days in South Dakota. We saw Wall Drug, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park (including Needles Highway) and Jewel Cave, drove past (not through) the Badlands, and did a side trip to Devil's Tower during that period. We also had time for a helicopter tour and horseback riding, a little exploration/dining in Hill City and Custer, plus some down time at the campground (Rafter J). I would have liked to have more time at Custer State Park and to explore the area, but I'd say it's do-able if you have 4 days when you're actually there (as opposed to travelling).

Unless you plan to be in Sturgis for Bike Week there's not much there to see. Wall Drug can be a quick stop off when visiting the Badlands, and you can do the Badlands tour pretty quickly too. I think you can have a nice time in four days and see "enough."

Coming from the east, it is easy to drive through the Badlands and make a stop or two. You do not need to get out and hike to enjoy it, the road takes you to several great view points. The road ends up right in Wall, so stop there for a visit, or a meal. (plus buy some memories!)
Head to the Black Hills, and see Mt. Rushmore, Wind Cave, the Mammoth sight, Jewel Cave, and crazy horse. If you have some time left, see some more sights. Sturgis and Deadwood can be skipped if you have limited time.
See, it can be done in 4 days. (I did it in 2)
