My 1-ton supercab 4x4 gets better mileage than many V6 COMPACT pickups, dramatically better than my brother's 5.3 Silverado. You really need to stop snorting the idiot powder.

I must agree, my I-6 Cummins gets better fuel economy than my V-6 Odyssey did, and it weighs a tonne more, pulls my travel trailer like it wasn't there, and I just filled up TODAY for 1.11/liter! What more can I ask for?

They have been around for awhile... My neighbor has a 1981 Volkswagen diesel pick up... Is THAT small enough?

I am in the ranks of seeing no use for a mid size truck. But I see many on the road so I guess they have their place. They are just as expensive and no better fuel mileage than a halfer.

Now, keep the little Ranger. Bring back the S-10 and Dodge D 50. Offer them with a 2L turbo charged 4 cyl diesel.

I'd be the first one in line!!

How many would pay $10,000 for a diesel option on a small pickup because that is what the Big 3 need too get back into the black.

There are several diesels expected out in the next few years. Among them are V6 (4.2) and V8 (5.6) Cummins diesels for Dodge 1/2 tons and Durango; A 4.5 V8 Duramax for Chevy/GMC; and a 4.4 V8 for Ford 1/2 tons. Also, several small cars and pickups are due to get diesel options soon. Some that I've heard about are: Dodge Caliber and Caravan, Ford Ranger and Focus, several models of VWs, Honda's Civic, the Mahindra mini-pickup and several others that I can't remember right now. The reason, of course is the 20 - 40% fuel mileage increase with the diesels over gassers and the need for the auto makers to get their EPA fuel mileage averages up.

The Powerstroke, Duramax, and Cummins are COMMERCIAL-grade diesels. That's why you pay $7000, $8000 price premiums for the diesel option.

If the major auto manufacturers are smart at all, they will make a more consumer-grade diesel engine for the light-duty pickups.

I'll keep my truck for towing, but as for going for something just because it has a diesel forget it. The mileage difference after the new diesels regenerate, and the price of diesel, where's the advantage really.

Cummins is going the wrong way with the V6 andV8 if that is true. The inline six is the best design and the only reason to go V is for the marketing guys. It would be so simple to offer a smaller diesel by using the sister engine to the 5.9. There is a 4 cylinder version that is the same as the six less two cylinders. Do the same with the 6.7 and you get a big piston small displacement engine that will easily fit the 1500 and would also be a good option for the 2500/3500. I will never buy a V6 or V8. I would buy the inline 4 and it would work harder than my 6.7, do more passive dpf regeneration, be able to pull my 14k trailer, and probably get well over 20 mpg unloaded.

Much of this conversation changes drastically if GM trades its 49% of GMAC financing for Chryslers Auto line. If Chrysler and GM get a deal done where does that leave the Titan? Isn't Dodge supposed to save Nissans truck line and Nissan save Dodges small car line? If this deal gets done the cummins could also be left out in the cold given the money GM has invested into new diesel technology. Experts are saying right now that the GMsler deal has a 50-50 shot.

Who knows maybe we will see the return of a diesel powered Luv.
