Quote: Cummins is going the wrong way with the V6 andV8 if that is true. The inline six is the best design and the only reason to go V is for the marketing guys
It allows then to build both on the same line, with common front accessories & many small parts. Also, a V6 is easier to package in a half-ton than an inline.
The 4BT is a good engine, but also a big, heavy, thrashy one. It's totally unsuited for a half-ton pickup if the goal is to get gas-pickup owners into a diesel.

How SO ?????? What is wrong with the 4BT??? Poor fuel economy?? Down on power??? A 1500 has the same room for the engine as the 3500. The 4 and the 6 share most all the parts.

Forgot to add that the best gas engine that I ever owned was a Ford inline six 300 in an F150. Big six, lots of torque, pulled the boat no problem, ANd GOOD ON FUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!. My 351 HO was a fuel sucking piece of junk.

When I was considering replacing my '86 turbodiesel Ranger I considered installing a 4BT in a '94 Ranger. I had the engineering info for the engine and all but then a financial downturn put it to a sudden stop.
Here is one that made it to completion.

Wrong with the 4BT? It's a 600lb hunk of iron, it's loud, it's tall, it shakes badly at idle, it's slow to rev. It's a good engine, but completely unsuitable for this application.

Actually it is second to none Jarlaxle. It definitely is not suitable for the 1/2 ton truck market.

Diesels don't have to be expensive.

I once had a Ford Ranger with a Perkins diesel in it. Ran fine with great fuel mileage but wouldn't get out it's own way. Acceleration was terrible. It was dependable. My dad had a small Nissan pickup with a Nissan diesel got great mileage but the truck was a rust bucket. It has been tried but just not lately. Ford is coming out with a 4.4 for their F150 and possibly the F250.

Personally, I would kill (not really!) for a small diesel pickup that got over 30 mpg on the highway running empty, could tow 5000 lbs, and was less than $20K. Is such a truck even possible?

Time will tell, but I think you are exactly right. I do not think the mileage numbers will be a good as what people think. You can by alot of gas for $5000 to $7000 dollars. Secondly that will put the small diesel 1/2 ton in the same price range as a 3/4 ton diesel. If you intend on using it as a TV why not get the 3/4 ton? JMO
For fun, I just priced a 2009 F-150 Supercrew and a 2009 F-250 Crewcab. Both Lariats and both gassers. The difference between the two was a mere $1600. For that difference, why would anyone needing a truck for towing/hauling consider a 1/2 ton? Even with the new 6-speed, the new F-150 is still a 1/2 ton. Towing 9,200# behind a half could get quite interesting. I still doubt, however, the diesel "adder" in the 1/2 tons will break $4,000 MSRP.
