I have a 1994 Holiday Rambler Navigator with a Cummins 8.3 and Spartan chassis. I was using the cruise control, pulled over for lunch, and upon taking the road again the cruise would not work. The cruise light is on but the unit will not engage. The exhaust brake has been switched off and on several times. The brake lights are working. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. MIKE

What brand is the cruise control? If a Bendix or other obsolete unit were parts are not available, you might consider going to a King Control electronic cruise. That is what we did several years ago.

Steve Boler at King is a wealth of information. With only minor rewiring, I was able to use the old Bendix wiring and stalk control so installation was easy.

I think that they ( the older units) run on a vacuum principal. Mine quit due to a break in the vacuum line, thus the diaphragm could activate the sensor. Spliced the line and it works like a champ.

Indeed, some are vacuum actuated, but most on diesels are air pressure operated as there is already an air compressor (air brakes, air suspension, etc) and a diesel has no vacuum source.

If you do have the Bendix air cruise, I think I have an old trouble-shooting manual around somewhere-- but parts are not available.

Brett, Here's a link to Cruise King. Is this the company you were referring to? The phone # listed on the website is different.

Yes, that is the company. And Steve Boler is the man. I have not called in a long time (no problems with our cruise), so indeed the phone number could have changed).

Your cruise control was probably made by Bendix or Dyna, now owned by Rostra at 800-782-3379. The best fix, if it isn't a blown fuse, is to replace the whole system at the engine with a new electronic version. The control at the steering wheel remains original.

If you're not sure on what you have, call National Parts at 877-466 6226. You'll need the last six digits of your VIN.

According to Spartan chassis my cruise is an Eco Cruise which is out of business as well. I obtained a trouble shooting manual but nowhere does it mention the problem of the cruise not engaging at all, just various malfunctions such as not holding the speed, etc. MIKE
