It happened. Got rid of the 04 gas Chev 2500HD and purchased 08 F350 long bed crew cab diesel dually w/4.3. Chev/GMC didn't have the towing capability I needed but the new rig is rated to tow up to 17,800 lbs. Needed to upgrade the truck before I could upgrade the 5th wheel. I AM very happy with the truck. These new diesels are very quiet.

Being a new Ford diesel guy, just a few questions. On the Chev, the transmission temp guage, not towing, held to about 1/4 the guage (don't remember temp). The ford runs at about 1/2 guage. Is this normal? Also, water temp seems to run about the same guage.

Well anyway, I will probably be asking a few more questions the more I drive.

Cluster guages are designed to be operator friendly and consumer research indicated that a centered reading was much more concentric to a consumer's perceived all-safe reading. Personally, I believe when towing especially large loads close to the vehicles towing capacity a much more detailed setup provides even more piece of mind. Consider adding the Bully Dog PMT (www.bullydog.com)it has a real nice screen that is easy to read and provides monitoring of virtually every data source available through the OEM OBDII system. There is no need to load the performance enhancing program to use this monitor so warranty impact is minimal. Best of luck with your new truck sounds like a nice one!

I understand that the guages are just "idiot lights" with needles that don't move! The easiest and least expensive upgrade that will cure the guage issue is the ScanGuage for around $169.00. Real time MPG, all temperature sensor readings, turbo info, trans temp, trouble codes, coolant temp, engine load, intake and exhaust temps, etc. Fun to play with and watch, too!

I saw the scan guage at a truck show this year. The readout was very small and hard to read. Yeah it was cheap but if you can't read it what good is it? I would prefer something more substantial and up to date with the latest technology. Why buy a $50K truck and put an outdated cheap guage in it? Just my thoughts.

Actually for the money the Edge Insight is about the most comprehensive gauge system for a Powerstroke. The in-dash temperature gauges are basically useless. I can tell you from experience that the coolant temp gauge will not top out until 235* at which point the idiot light will come on also. At temperatures of over 225* it never reads more than 3/4.

The trans temp gauge is just as bad. At 200* it still hasn't moved beyond it's normal position. There are quite a few plug and play gauge options out there that will simply plug into the OBD II port on your Ford. With the 6.4 diesel you don't even have to tap the manifold for a pyro to read EGT. It can be read from the OBD.

IMPOSSIBLE! The only factory damped gauges came on the LLY Duramax.
