I want to put a side light on a cargo trailer I'm outfitting for hauling an ATV. Does anyone who has the "scare lights" think they are too bright for normal use. I would like the extra light for any around camp chores but wouldn't want something that would be glaring bright for sitting around a fire. The standard porch lights that we have on the toy hauler are just about right for our general night time use. Any opinions are appreciated.

I have both on the right side of the coach. The standard porch light is OK for navigation and little else. So I added a Scare Light several feet away, and the way it's lensed, sprays about equal light as the patio light down below, but throws a considerable amount out about 20' or so. I also added a dimmer to the scare light in case I want to mellow it out, so that worked out well.

I think that the porch light you would want about a 20 watt bulb, so that you can see what your are doing. With the "Scare LIght" you would want something about three times brighter, or even a couple of fixtures, so that you startle the wouldbe burgular, and scare them away. Also so that you have more light for setting up camp at night.
I have a 12 VDC motion sensor that I wired to turn on my porch light on my RV at night. Because of my solar system, I don't worry about running the battery down while in storage.
The factory also installed a driver's side porch light, it comes in handy on the rare times I set up at night, or for watching wildlife out the drivers side at night.

Scare lights are way too bright, IMO, to use for sitting around the campfire!!

I have the regular porch light and two Halogen "scare" lights on the side. I rarely use the bright ones.
With the awning open it directs the light mostly on my own site although bright. With the awning closed it can light up half of a campground. No way would I keep the Halogens on while sitting around the fire, They are only used when absolutely necessary and then briefly.

This is not directed at the OP, and a little off track, but I'm going to say what I'm sure many others are thinking....use whatever you want for your application as long as you turn them out at night. There is nothing worse that being beside some inconsiderate SOB, who leaves the lights shining into your rig all night because he is afraid of his own shadow (pun intended)!!!...Brian

Plus, think about it; Is your light going to SCARE a thief away, or give him light to find what he wants?
But then, if the lights aren't on, the thief might trip, break a leg, and sue you for not leaving a light on!
Oh, what to do???
