Just wandering why TJ who is 8 months old cleans Peanuts head who is 4 months old. Both are males and TJ is neutered. TJ washes Peanuts head for him when he is sleepiong or laying on the floor or couch. Its not a maternal instinct so what would it be?

I think it's bonding/marking behavior. My cats (one tom, one queen)have lived together with me for ten years now, and head/ear washing are still done regularly-seems to be most often at bed or nap time. They're just being mysterious cats as cats are wont to be ;-) I think it's sweet, that is until the female has had enough and swats the tom!

I tend to think it's marking too. My 17-year-old male has done it to his companion cats for many years, including to his "sister" (our 4-year-old female). Occasionally she returns the "favor." He used to do it to our last other male to the point where the other cat got annoyed and left - then the licker would move into the nice cushy warm spot his "brother" had just vacated.

Our JJ, 13 yr male/neutered washes little Jesse's head and face all the time, it is a bonding thing with them. Once in a while Jesse will return the good deed but it' mostly the old guy taking care of the youngster.
Aren't they adorable.

We have two male littermates that groom each other and have been doing so for over 7 years.
