Just returned from two weeks vacation. At beginning of trip (from eastern Oklahoma to Raton, New Mexico), we experienced power failure in engine. After changing fuel filters, etc. we limped into Raton, NM (Cimino Ford) who after diagnositics, etc. found bad EGR valve and oil cooler. Both replaced under Ford's ESP that we purchased in 2007. After purchase of truck last year, we heard horror stories about this particular engine, etc. Question: do we have much more to be concerned with? Engine, transmission, turbo? This problem caused us to be without a tow vehicle for over a week. Good friends came to our rescue and towed us from Raton, NM to South Fork Colorado, our destination. We're trying to avoid another repeat of major problems. Just need to know what other problems are "popular" with this truck. All comments or advice are appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, the 03-04 Ford 6.0l diesels have major problems! Turbos were a big one. The 05 and up ones still have a few grimlins of their own.

I think I would put it up for sale while it's running good and get something else.
That said, we haven't had any problems with our '05 E350 diesel van.

I too have a 2004 F-350 diesel and have had some of the same problems. I've replaced the egr valve twice, am on my second turbo and have had several sensors replaced. No, I'm not happy about any of that and I also bought an extended warranty for my truck. Having done those things, I have been problem free for the last two years. Other than these issues, I really like the truck. My personal suggestion is to maintain the truck well and use the heck out of it. The current market for used diesel trucks is very poor, the new ones have their own issues, especially in poorer fuel economy, and they are expensive, even with the price reductions recently featured. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

NancyG,
If I was stuck with that truck I would look to selling it and upgrading to a 2000-2003 Ford F350 with 7.3 PSD. Extremely reliable for the price and anything under a 100,000 miles would give you many years of service. Although IMHO, nothing will top the old body style 94 - 97 Ford Diesels. Good luck with your truck and take care.

You had an oasis report pulled on the truck??? If not do so to see what has been done in the past. Many of these problems re-occur.... I had an 03 that I thought was a good one, until about 37k miles, when EGr went, turbo went, then began to leak oil.. I would be real paranoid about a used 6.0 psd for sale... I traded mine off and heard the new owner of the truck in less than 6 months, put another turbo and egr valve on and then had some injector problems.... Bottom line is no matter what the diehards say, the facts are plain and simple, the 6.0psd is not the best motor... The worst duramax and cummins is better... Too bad, because other than that the Ford super duty is the best truck...Check out dieselstop.com, you see some more honest opinions of the motor... You know how it is, I was the same way when I had my ford, even though it had problems, you still had to chest up and defend your truck..but to other ford owners the truth came out... Im glad ford seems to be back on track with the new 6.4 psd..
I would NOT do any mods to the truck, and DONT let it idle for long periods.. Look in the manual, somewhere around 3-5 minutes after a long pull or hard run...Idling is gums up the turbo and egr...
Just keep the truck and see how it goes......
I think we are going to start seeing alot of people on here buying, or bought them trucks, especialy when they are coming out of warranty.. they are really nice looking trucks....

It is too bad the 7.3L PSD wasn't available with the Torqueshift transmission.
But I have to agree, and have said many times myself, never keep a 6.0L PSD that isn't under warranty.
Look through my old posts/threads if you want to read about 6.0L frustration.

I had a 2004 F350 PSD that I had many issues with, completely stock, never abused, maintained by dealer. I had some other problems that were not related to the motor..... slip clutch in rear diff went out so that was rebuilt(40,000 miles), Rotors (40,000 miles) Ball joints (50,000 miles).
I had numerous small issues with the truck.... 3 EGR valves, broken glow plug harness (1st oil leak), various sensors (can't remember the names). The truck was in and out of the shop a lot. The final straw was the bedplate leak I had fixed in which the dealer found the crank and all bearings to be bad upon engine removal (57,000 miles). I was without my truck for 6 weeks and got it back the Friday of the 4th of July Weekend......that summer was a total loss!
I sold the truck and switched to Chevy. I would check out thedieselstop.com for many hours of reading. I spent hours on that forum trying to figure out what was wrong with my truck.

I'd dump it and look at a different truck, that's likely just the tip of the iceberg. If you're a Ford fan, check out the 6.4L. It seems to be a better engine.
