The road from Chicken to Tok is mostly asphalt IRC from my late April 2005 trip up to Eagle. It turns to gravel about a mile or two after Chicken towards Eagle.
Have a safe trip.

Actually, that is one of the best roads in the state!! It is wide asphalt, smooth and appeared to be new when we were there in 2003.
See ya' down the road!

Drove it summer 2007. Excellent road, very scenic. Gets sort of rough in other direction, from Chicken to Eagle and/or to the Canadian border.

We traveled that highway this past August. The road is very good from Tok to 1 mile before you get to Chicken, beyond that it is mostly dirt with some gravel and lots of potholes to the US/Canada border. From there it is paved with gravel sections to approximately 2 miles before Dawson, YT. From then on it is well paved. Because of the dirt and lack of gravel I would expect that the road surface would become quite slippery when wet. We were fortunate to have had beautiful weather and the scenery was spectacular. IMHO inclement weather would definitely lessen the experience.

We are still on the way back from Alaska (112 days and counting) and will be home by Halloween.
Safe travels.

We drove the road from Tok to Chicken this summer (late July) and, except for an area where they were repairing the road, it was paved and in good condition. One of the better roads we drove. We did not go past Chicken, however.

We drove from Chicken to Dawson in July in the rain. We just took our time (a lot of 20mph) and pulled as far as we were willing to go to the side and stopped when meeting a semi (3) or MH. The night we stayed in Chicken, a tow truck came back through from pulling a MH back onto the road when it got too far on the shoulder and got stuck.
Scenery watching wasn't great due to the rain.

Me thinks edwardt48 is confused!
Who is "they" that doesn't recommend this road in wet weather??
The road is fine...or at least it was in June when I went over it. Gravel within a mile of Chicken....but the rest is just fine. I don't see how a little water would cause any problems.

I miss-understood the subject. The road between Tok and Chicken is fine. Like a lot of Alaska highways, there's some frost heaves and hills, but it's well paved by Alaska standards.
