I paid for a spotbeam for Albuquerque CH. Do you know if I can receive other spotbeams when on the road by receiving (changing to) other transponders.

Thanks,

Rick

Just by traveling from one location to another you will automatically receive the other spot beams, changing transponders isn't required. However, I think that you are actually asking is if when you move to a different spot beam can you get the locals in that spot beam. The short answer is no because your receiver is only authorized to get the locals in your account address. This is assuming that you have an account for your house and are taking that receiver with you. If you have an RV account you may be able to get a CSR to change the authorization to your current location as you travel.

I'm confused. Are the spot beams listed only where local channels can be acquired by people who live within the beam? I know these aren't the only place to receive DirecTv as I've gotten excellent reception all over the country. Someone please give me an idiot lesson.

The spot beams show where the local channels for a particular city are available.

Spot beams carry only the local major network channels such as your local NBS, CBS, ABC, and the like. All the rest of the channels are beamed all over the continental US. If you subscribe to your locals and travel out of your spot beam you will no longer receive your locals and as fpresto said you will not receive other locals once you enter their spot beam. The only exception is Los Angeles and Chicago, which are beamed over the continental US. If you subscribe to one of these you will receive them all over the country.

The SD spot beams will usually carry all of the local stations in any given market. For example,Chicago has 17 SD stations on the 101 satellite, and 5 HD stations, on another satellite, on Directv. All are on spot beams.
In most cases, it's the HD channels where only the major network stations are carried. And that's if Directv can reach an agreement with the stations. Our locals just went up in HD on Directv and there's only two of the four. Directv and Schurz, the stations' owner can't reach an agreement.

That, plus DirecTV does not have unlimited bandwidth to include every station in every market that may want DirecTV to carry them in HD. Ain't gonna happen.
