First, thanks for all who have been offering advise in my search for a new truck/TV. The current truck I'm considering is a 2005(build date 4/23/05) Ford F250 4x4 Crew Cab King Ranch with the 6.0L diesel and 33K miles on it. VIN# 1FTSW21P75ED19825. I have read some horror stories(head gasket, turbo, VGT Soleniod, and fuel injectors) here and on various diesel forums. I have read some good stuff as well. I have lots of experience driving Fords with this motor(ambulances and F250's) but no hands on experience with breakdowns or problems because the fire dept I work for has mechanics that take care of all of that.
I test drove this truck and liked it. The Carfax records showed only the truck's change of hands, dealer maintenance and the replacing of the the truck's computer a couple years ago. I got the guy at the used car lot that it's on(nice stuff, mostly VG condition late model US cars and trucks) to get me an OASIS report and the only "Outstanding Field Service Action" is has is "05B32 DE-Gas Bottle Fill Level Label And Fluid Level Adjustment." I also spoke with one of our FD's mechanics and he said he'd still buy a 6.0L Ford in a nice used truck. But he'd get an extended warranty, but he'd get that on any used truck he'd buy. He's the guy who fixes everything we break and we drive our vehicles VERY balls out most of the time.
Given all this data, would you still strongly recommend me NOT considering this truck? And is there any additional "homework" I can or should do before pulling the trigger(sometime next week probably? I can get this truck for $23850, down from $27000.

I have an '06 F250 PSD, but it only has 40K miles on it. I do have an RV buddy that has an '05 F250 PSD with over 100K miles on it and the truck is still going strong.

I have a 2004 with 53,000. I have the 6.0. They told me just make sure you do your regular oil changes and such and you will be fine. I think you will be fine.

I have quite a bit of mechanical experience with the 6.0 in anything from a pickup used as a car to F550 work trucks to even a full out race truck running 11.80s in the 1/4 mile.
I can tell you that an 05 truck with a clean OASIS should be pretty good. As long as they are kept at stock hp levels the 05-07 6.0s are pretty reliable.
They tend to have a problem with the EGR cooler when used for heavy towing. The other issue with 05 models is the snap to connect fitting on the high pressure oil system. Even then it's only in certain build dates and once it's updated will not be a problem again.
The motor itself will take quite a bit of abuse. A friend of mine has an 06 with head studs, bigger injectors and updated turbo that along with 2 stages of nitrous is propelling a 7500 lb crewcab truck to 11.86 in the 1/4 mile. Other than some minor problems the truck has been virtually bulletproof for nearly 70,000 miles. That's an extreme example, but at stock hp levels they are very reliable engines.
Most of the bad reputation the 6.0 has earned has come from people modifying them to higher hp with inferior tuning. At 325 flywheel hp they do just fine. It's very easy to get more than 500 out of them just with programming alone. Increase the power of anything more than 50% and it's not hard to cause problems.

The '03s and early build '04s had the most problems. I had a late build '04 F250 6.0 that I traded at 53,000 miles. Only problem I ever had was an EGR valve at about 35,000. Replaced it under warranty and never another problem. Traded it for an '07 F350 6.0 that now has 34,000 miles and no problem at all.
Ford is also offering a 200,000 mile extended warranty now.

Mine is an 05 with 91,000. Still the best truck I've ever owned. I tow a 12,000" 35' 5er with no problem. See photo in my sig. Sounds like a great price too!

I had a 2004 F-250 6.0PSD, owned it for 4 years, put almost 70,000 miles, many towing, on the truck. Had it back for a wiring harness recall and had to have one EGR valve replaced under warranty. When the valve acting up(sputtering, hesitation) I was towing the rv up in Northern NH. I shut the truck down, removed the wire harness connection from the valve and continued on my vacation for another 1500 miles and the engine ran just fine. Maybe I was lucky but it was a great truck, fantastic power, great build quality. Only reason I sold it was I needed at the time a truck capable of hauling a very large trailer. Wish I still had that truck. Of course I replaced it with another Superduty diesel, best truck available.
