Search my old posts/threads.
I have a 6.0L PSD at work that is bone stock, and has had many issues.
All I can honestly say is if you do buy it, sell it before the warranty runs out.

bigben55 wrote: First, thanks for all who have been offering advise in my search for a new truck/TV. The current truck I'm considering is a 2005(build date 4/23/05) Ford F250 4x4 Crew Cab King Ranch with the 6.0L diesel and 33K miles on it. VIN# 1FTSW21P75ED19825. I have read some horror stories(head gasket, turbo, VGT Soleniod, and fuel injectors) here and on various diesel forums. I have read some good stuff as well. I have lots of experience driving Fords with this motor(ambulances and F250's) but no hands on experience with breakdowns or problems because the fire dept I work for has mechanics that take care of all of that.
I test drove this truck and liked it. The Carfax records showed only the truck's change of hands, dealer maintenance and the replacing of the the truck's computer a couple years ago. I got the guy at the used car lot that it's on(nice stuff, mostly VG condition late model US cars and trucks) to get me an OASIS report and the only "Outstanding Field Service Action" is has is "05B32 DE-Gas Bottle Fill Level Label And Fluid Level Adjustment." I also spoke with one of our FD's mechanics and he said he'd still buy a 6.0L Ford in a nice used truck. But he'd get an extended warranty, but he'd get that on any used truck he'd buy. He's the guy who fixes everything we break and we drive our vehicles VERY balls out most of the time.
Given all this data, would you still strongly recommend me NOT considering this truck? And is there any additional "homework" I can or should do before pulling the trigger(sometime next week probably? I can get this truck for $23850, down from $27000.

2004 F350 6.0L with almost 68,000 miles and no issues. Mine was a late build '04. On dieselstop.com, I found the date that was when Ford made some changes to the 6.0 that fixed some of the issues in the earlier 6.0L. You are going to be told about how rock solid the 7.3L was and how bad the 6.0L is. Well my first PSD was a 1999 7.3L but it didn't have the infamous "cackle", injector issues. Nor did it have the turbo bolt problems. In other words, if you read long enough at the time that the engines are out, you are going to find horror stories in all of them, including the "rock solid" Duramax.

You are absolutely correct! The 7.3 isn't as rock solid as people would have you believe. With both in stock form I would say the 7.3 and 6.0 are very close as far as reliability. Bump the 7.3 up to the stock hp level of the 6.0 and the tables start to turn.
Even at stock hp levels the 4R100 transmission behind the 7.3 is prone to failure. The 5R110 behind the 6.0 has been known to handle well over 500 rear wheel hp before it becomes unreliable. The beloved Allison behind the Duramax will puke it's guts out at anything above 400 hp.
I've said it before and I'll say it over and over, many of the horror stories that you hear about the 6.0 come from people who tuned or "chipped" them to more than 400 hp and abused them severely. The 03 and early 04 models had more issues stock but not so much for the 05-07s.
Basically it's a pick your poison sort of thing. You can spend $2,000 for a head gasket job on the 6.0 or you can spend $3,000+ for a trans rebuild on the 7.3, Duramax or Cummins. The 6.0 has a 100,000 miles/5 year warranty so basically you have more than 60,000 miles and 2+ years left on that truck. Most likely if it is to become a problem child it will do so before 100K. With your clean OASIS report, I wouldn't sweat it.

Wrong
The 6.0 has been a problem Motor like no other. Ford and IH have sued each other over the many problems. I agree no engine is perfect however the 6.0 PSD has had way more issues than a modern motor should. Ford only wished the problems could be traced to chipping.
The later 6.0's have been more reliable nevertheless I would not own a 6.0. Why take a chance? There are other choices. I opted for a older 7.3 instead of a newer 6.0. The 6.0 is a more powerful engine than the 7.3 However it has had just too many issues for me.

I'm curious to where you found this information from? Not trying to get into a brand war just have never heard or read this.
I've said it before and I'll say it over and over, many of the horror stories that you hear about the 6.0 come from people who tuned or "chipped" them to more than 400 hp and abused them severely.
I've heard this quite a bit and yes there were troubles with folks tuning and abusing them.... but, how do you explain the issues that the stock trucks had....like for instance...."mine"
Basically it's a pick your poison sort of thing. You can spend $2,000 for a head gasket job.......
I'm no expert but, your labor might get pretty close to $2000 to get to the motor. "Cab Off" design for engine removal.
I'm really not trying to get into a brand war with this, I've just went through the headache of knowing every mechanic at my local Ford dealership by name. When I left the always said, "see you next week"
I am glad to see Ford throwing out an extended warranty for the 6.0 diesels to 200K miles. Not sure why they would do such a thing since this motor was "so sound"
Bottom line if you get a good one they seem to be great! I didn't want to gamble on another 6.0 or the new 6.4 from Ford.
One word of caution for you on the oasis report...... I was curious and had someone pull mine when I was having all the issues and was told nothing came up on it. Not sure if I'd trust the oasis.
Wish You Luck

Very nice truck....especially the king ranch... ashame the motor is nowhere near as good as a cummins or duramax... yes there are a few on here that claim they havent had problems. My experience with the motor, I just cant trust it..Especially when they start racking up miles, I just dont think it will be as dependable as the other diesels.... I even know diehard ford guys who wouldnt own it...I have nothing against ford, I own a Expedition now and wouold own a new 6.4 psd... Spend some time on the dieselstop.com , and look into this subject..
I guess for the price and with a good warranty you could always dump it if it began to develop problems..
AS far as your FD mechanics, I guess they will know if they have problems, but I doubt they do much more than regualar maint on them.. The 6.0psd really has to be taken to the dealer.... and ask one of the fords mecahnics about them....when I had my 6.0 in the shop, one ford mechanic said the 6.0 psd was a ford mechanics NIGHTMARE!! they can never really seem to fix them, the problems re-occur..
Reminds me of an article in dieselpower mag, they had the top 10 diesel engines, and the 6.0 didnt make the list. Google it and read publication after publication and info on this subject for days, you listen to a handful on here and take thier word, would be not very wise..
You are going to get the group on here that are Ford diehards and swear by it, but facts are facts and they are out there.....Of the big three diesels, there is no other subject that is argued about as much as the 6.0psd......Ford had the 7.3 psd and the D-max came on strong, and then the cummins started getting better, so Ford threw the 6.0psd out there to compete without much testing at all..
your money, good luck.....

yea you will find horror stories on all trucks... But you sir are really clueless.. YOU WILL NOT find as many horror stories on the others as you will a 6.0psd...... the next worst diesel engine to the 6.0 is the old GM's!!!

You are somewhat right in your post.... the 7.3 psd IS FAR more reliable than a 6.0psd though..... the tranny is not as solid as a torqshift though....AS far as the allison puking its guts??? your Nuts!! Sounds like an angry person thats mad Gm has the allison....You see very little about an allison tranny going out..
AS far as the the only 6.o's with problems are the modified ones?? thats Just hogwash that those who try to justify this motor come up with.....If that was the case FORD WOULDNT have LOST thier A$$ on the 6.0psd, becasue its no secret they deny warranty for mods....YES the 6.o psd IS AT ITS LIMITS as far as HP, so mods just puts that much more strain on it.....
Like I said before, I think the 6.0 psd Fiasco could have been alot worse for Ford.... the many diehards that have stuck it out with ford and the 6.0, Gee, Ford should reward you all...AS far as my current truck, I like the super duty better, but the D-max will run circles around the 6.0psd.....Couldnt imagine going to a 6.o after driving the d-max.. If I was in the market today though, I must say I would try the new super duty........

I have to disagree with a lot of this post. You will be far more likely to have issues with a 6.0L PSD than either a Dodge 48RE transmission or an Allison transmission. You can "pick your poison" if you want to, but the 6.0L PSD will very likely get you before the rest.
Also, I simply can't believe that even in stock form a 6.0L PSD is as reliable as the 7.3L PSD.
Sure there are some 6.0L PSD trucks out there with no problems to this point. They aren't ALL bad, but if you look at the percentages of problems per trucks sold, the chances are greater a 6.0L PSD will give you trouble. There simply would not be so much turmoil between Navistar and Ford if the 6.0L PSD was a good engine like the Cummins and Duramax.
