I bought a 2005 E450 6.0 PSD new, took delivery of it in Feb. 2005. The most I have done is replace the fan belt, no problems with that engine at all.

I have a 2003 6.0 67k miles, bone stock except muffler delete.

In the first 53k miles it had...

1 turbo, 2 EGR valves, and multiple computer flashes.

That's the good part of this story!

In the last 14k miles, it's been a real winner. So far...

2 EGR valves, a turbo, an EGR hose, 3 injectors, a rear main seal that leaked like the Exxon Valdez.

Oh, and I almost forgot... about 3k miles ago...HEADGASKETS!

If I could set it on fire and get away with it, I would. The sad thing is with todays economy it's worth about 12k in trade.

It's your money, but when this thing is gone, I'm buying a 5.9 Cummins and never looking back...

We have several at my company. Two F350 CC DRW were used for nightly runs between Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Elko. We were racking up 600+ miles per night for a total of 230k miles before we moved them to lighter duty. They were towing car hauler trailers, but not usually loaded very heavy. They were built around the time your candidate truck was. The fuel system was not reliable. One truck went through 5 fuel pumps and two sets of injectors, and the other truck, through 4 pumps and 1.5 sets of injectors. Other trucks used less did not have problems. Based on this, I would say that this particular year is not a good choice for a heavy-use application.

For the amount of miles you ran on them, that's not too bad.

Huh?? For the amount of miles ran on them they averaged a pump every 25,500 miles and injectors every 65,000 miles. For a truck that was built to tow.........Thats horrible! I know I wouldn't want to replace a pump that often and replace injectors like it was a routine maintenance componet.
Even though some of these repairs were more than likely covered under warranty its still a hassle to be without the truck when repairs are being done. When my 6.0L was in the shop I couldn't tow my boat (10,000 lbs) or my trailer (fifth wheel) with the rental they put me in.

Given the track record on the 6.4L its looking to be a pretty good motor, I wouldn't even consider a 6.0L unless I could pick it dirt cheap

Dirt Cheap = $10,000 or less, even at that I'd have to scratch my head and think about it.
Of course this is just my opinion.

In other words, if you read long enough at the time that the engines are out, you are going to find horror stories in all of them, including the "rock solid" Duramax.

You are absolutely correct! The 7.3 isn't as rock solid as people would have you believe. With both in stock form I would say the 7.3 and 6.0 are very close as far as reliability. Bump the 7.3 up to the stock hp level of the 6.0 and the tables start to turn.

Even at stock hp levels the 4R100 transmission behind the 7.3 is prone to failure. The 5R110 behind the 6.0 has been known to handle well over 500 rear wheel hp before it becomes unreliable. The beloved Allison behind the Duramax will puke it's guts out at anything above 400 hp.

I've said it before and I'll say it over and over, many of the horror stories that you hear about the 6.0 come from people who tuned or "chipped" them to more than 400 hp and abused them severely. The 03 and early 04 models had more issues stock but not so much for the 05-07s.

Basically it's a pick your poison sort of thing. You can spend $2,000 for a head gasket job on the 6.0 or you can spend $3,000+ for a trans rebuild on the 7.3, Duramax or Cummins. The 6.0 has a 100,000 miles/5 year warranty so basically you have more than 60,000 miles and 2+ years left on that truck. Most likely if it is to become a problem child it will do so before 100K. With your clean OASIS report, I wouldn't sweat it.

I have to disagree with a lot of this post. You will be far more likely to have issues with a 6.0L PSD than either a Dodge 48RE transmission or an Allison transmission. You can "pick your poison" if you want to, but the 6.0L PSD will very likely get you before the rest.

Also, I simply can't believe that even in stock form a 6.0L PSD is as reliable as the 7.3L PSD.

Sure there are some 6.0L PSD trucks out there with no problems to this point. They aren't ALL bad, but if you look at the percentages of problems per trucks sold, the chances are greater a 6.0L PSD will give you trouble. There simply would not be so much turmoil between Navistar and Ford if the 6.0L PSD was a good engine like the Cummins and Duramax.
