We're just coming back from spending the summer up there and all the stories about how bad the roads were and the rock damage and whatever else, were just that - stories. 95% of the roads aren't that bad and the 5% that are, probably don't add up to more than 150 miles of the 2000 mile trip. The key to a successful, stress free trip is to drive slower than you want to, there are long distances that are best driven at no more than 40-45 MPH, There is construction and potholes, but they'll be in different areas when you go so don't worry about it.
It's a terribly long, boring drive, but OH so worth it, Alaska is everything you've heard and more, it's simply amazing.

Have A great trip,

Fred

Get "The Milepost Magazine" preferably the 2009 edition. It should be out in Janruary.
Take your time.

Gina, you can find a myriad of information regarding the Alaska Highway by going to the long thread from people that went to Alaska and northern Canada this past summer. Many of those posting to that item have very nice blogs and photo sites. It had hundreds of responses. ( I just checked for that thread and everything past page 2 on Canada/Alaska is no longer there (?)) Perhaps someone else has that site address.)

Also check out the site, www.explorenorth.com This site is run by forum member, Murray, and is probably the most outstanding information/photo site about the north country that I have found. Another excellent site is to find anything that sue t. has posted and go to her web site, http://suethomas.ca where you will find great photos and narrative comments.
Mike and Terri Church have, IMHO, the best camping book available for the trip. www.rollinghomes.com It is the most honest and they do the comments on the businesses themselves, not allowing the owners of the businesses to do their narratives as does the Milepost. The Milepost normally is available later in the spring than mentioned above. I tend to buy a new Milepost every year to add to my collection of them (35+) at present but it has become bloated with advertisements. I much preferred the older versions that were put out by the previous owners of the Milepost.

Drive slow. Don't miss the Top of the World Hwy, it's a little rough but the view is worth every bump.

Have fun!

Here are 10 quick tips (I could go on for hours about Alaska and the trip up as I've driven the Alcan 6 times now)

1. Go slow
2. Liard Hot Springs
3. Hike (whatever your ability is, get out of the vehicle and into the woods however and whenever you can).
4. Talk to fellow travellers and locals - they are full of recent information.
5. Bring good binoculars. You are spending a lot of money on the trip, don't be cheap on binoculars if you want to view wildlife.
6. Coffee at Toad River Lodge, mile 422 AK HWY. They have free wifi now too.
7. Depending when in May you go, Muncho Lake Campground may be closed, BUT there is one campsite outside the gate - use it.
8. Drive in the evening after 6 p.m. - you will see more wildlife during those hours.
9. Apply #8 especially between Ft. Nelson and Watson Lake.
10. Stop at Visitors Centers, especially in Canada - they actually train the people to be very helpful and hospitality oriented - and it shows.

I see guide books mentioned. We had them all and used the Church book the most.
Excellent resource!
