I want to put new LT235/85R16 LRE tires on my tandem axle 8,500# (fully loaded) travel trailer, and would prefer to go with Michelin since I have had such good luck on my truck with their LTX M/S tires. Here are my questions.
1. I know that the Michelin XPS Rib is a highly rated tire for RV use. But, has anybody had any experience with the LTX M/S tires on a travel trailer or fifth wheel? They sure work great on the tow vehicle (e.g. quiet, soft ride, long mileage, NO problems of any kind even on rough gravel roads, etc.).
2. My tire dealer carries both Michelin and B.F. Goodrich. He is trying to convince me to save some $ and go with B.F. Goodrich Commercial T/A tires. Does anyone have any thoughts on these for a travel trailer?

Humpty, How long have you been running the TAs, and how many miles on them? I am also thinking of the TAs for both TV and 5er.

I love Michelins on cars for quiet and comfortable ride as well long thread life.
Those issues don't matter on TT. If the price different is significant, I would go with BF

Hmmm, I have the LTX M/S on the truck, and the Ribs on the trailer. I didn't consider putting the LTX M/S on the trailer, as I was thinking that it wouldn't be a good idea due to sidewall strength.... Maybe I'm off base with that thought...

1. generally a (HT) highway tread and even some AS with smaller tread blocks work best for a trailer tire (least tread squirm). The larger the tread blocks in a MT or some M/S tires the more tread squirm the tire can have. Don't confuse a trucks requirement for a good tire and a trailers requirements. They live in a much different work inviroment
2. your dealer is correct. Those BFG Commercial LT's E are a great trailer tire for heavier trailers at any legal speed you want to run.

Thanks for that bit of information about the quality of the B.F. G. Commercial T/A tires. How would you compare them against the Michelin XPS Rib (i.e. are the XPS that much $$$ better)?

personally I think the XPS Ribs are in a class by themselves. They are a steel ply carcass tire with regular steel belt under the treads. Thats one big reason their the only tire that is recommended for commercial trailer use. The only other 16" steel ply carcass LT tire I know of is the Bridgestone Duravis-250. The other LT tires are a fabric ply carcass with steel belts under the tread. If you can swing the bucks the XPS Ribs are tops. Their popular with commercial haulers as they can be pushed to the max weights at max interstate speeds all day long.

We had them put on in March after a blow out on the way to the Bristol Race. We probably have around 3000 miles on them.
